The man who died in the Whanganui River yesterday has been identified as 31-year-old Ruka Rangiahuta Broughton (Junior).

The National Dive Squad recovered Broughton after locating his body about 4.30pm yesterday afternoon.

It followed reports of a man in distress near Anzac Parade just over an hour earlier.

A rāhui has been put in place for three days from Te Ao Hou marae, past Pūtiki, out to the river mouth.

The death will be referred to the Coroner.
