A US man who took issue with the amount of mayonnaise on his Subway sandwich shot and killed the worker and injured another,

The tragic shooting happened on Sunday at 6:30pm (local time) at a Subway restaurant in downtown Atlanta.

Police said the man argued with the two female Subway workers about the amount of mayonnaise on his sandwich before shooting them.

"This was a very tragic situation that did not have to occur," said Atlanta police Deputy Chief Charles Hampton Jr.

Deputy Chief Hampton Jr said the 36-year-old man, alleged to be the shooter, was arrested the same evening after someone whom police are not identifying provided them with information.

Hampton said police are not immediately releasing the suspected shooter's name because of the ongoing investigation.

The victim was identified by Atlanta news station 11 Alive as 26-year-old Brittany Macon.

Her colleague, a 24-year-old, remained in a critical condition on Monday. Hampton said her 5-year-old son was in the restaurant at the time, and he added the child will have trauma to deal with now.

The restaurant co-owner Willie Glenn told WSB-TV his heart is broken.

"It just breaks my heart to know that someone has the audacity to point a weapon and shoot someone for as little as too much mayonnaise on a sandwich."
