Donald Trump has congratulated Boris Johnson as he said it looked like he was on the way to a "big win" in the election.

The US President said: "Looking like a big win for Boris in the U.K.!"

It came on what looked like a landslide victory for Mr Johnson, who has taken several key seats from Labour.

Jo Swinson, the Lib Dem leader, lost her seat while Jeremy Corbyn announced he would step down as Labour leader after the disastrous results.

The president was not the only Trump to congratulate Mr Johnson. His daughter Ivanka also tweeted:

There has been much speculation about the relationship between Mr Johnson and Mr Trump and any post-Brexit trade deals between the US and UK.

Earlier in the campaign, Mr Trump waded into the general election by praising Mr Johnson, backing Brexit and flatly dismissing Labour’s claim that the NHS would be on the table during talks on a US-UK trade deal.

The US President had insisted he would “stay out” of the historic poll only to put himself at the centre of it during an impromptu press conference during his UK visit

“I think Boris is very capable,” he said at the time. “I think he will do a good job.”

At first Mr Trump appeared to be trying not to interfere in the UK election, telling the press conference: “I don’t want to complicate it.”

But he then stressed his support for the Tory flagship policy of quitting the European Union, saying: “You know that I was a fan of Brexit. I called it the day before.”
