Hurricane Florence, set to lash North Carolina, is just one of many major storms brewing around the globe.

In the Atlantic Hurricane Helene is speeding towards Britain and Tropical Storm Isaac is moving towards the Caribbean.

There's also a typhoon approaching the Philippines, Super Typhoon Mangkhut, with maximum winds of over 200km/h over the next couple of days, and Hurricane Olivia is closing in on Hawaii.

NIWA forecaster Chris Brandolino told The AM Show on Friday Florence will be one of the worst tropical systems to hit the state in a generation, and will have "devastating and catastrophic impacts".

Tropical Storm Paul is also looming in the eastern Pacific, and Tropical Storm 27W in the northwest.

Tropical disturbances Invest 95L in the Gulf of Mexico and Invest 91W north of Australia are being monitored.

Florence is the most alarming however. Mr Brandolino says it's expected to slow down once it gets to the North Carolina coastline, bringing persistent heavy rain and huge waves.

"North Carolina and South Carolina could be exceeding state records with rainfall amounts... some areas will exceed a metre of rain - 1000mm of rain could fall from the system over the course of three, four, five days."
