Yams may appear like sweet potatoes but these vegetables are less sweet and packed with nutrients that can help improve your health. 

Yams commonly come from Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. The vegetable can provide fiber, vitamins C and B5, magnesium, potassium and folate, among others. 

Another good thing is that you can easily add yams to your daily diet. You can bake them, steam, roast, boil or fry them.  

One of the common health benefits of yams is weight loss. Some dieters claimed that the vegetable could help cut food consumption and manage appetite.

Previous studies found that diets containing yams could reduce colon and liver tumor growth. Researchers said the vegetable contains antioxidants that play an important role in fighting cancer.

Yams’ health benefits could reach the brain. One study suggested that the people who take yam extract supplement could improve brain function better than other people. 

A compound called diosgenin in the vegetable has been linked to enhanced neuron growth, memory and learning abilities, according to Healthline.

Blood Sugar Management

Researchers who analyzed the effects of yams found that the vegetable could reduce blood sugar absorption, fasting blood sugar and hemoglobin A1c levels, which all help in improving blood sugar control. 

Cuts Menopause Symptoms

Reduced symptoms of menopause is one of the top benefits of eating yams. A study with 24 postmenopausal women found that adding yams to two meals per day could help increase estrone and estradiol in the blood, which may ease menopause symptoms.

Topical application of wild yam cream also appeared effective to reduce flushing and night sweats in women. 

Reduces Inflammation

The vegetable can help reduce chronic inflammation because of its antioxidants. Such condition has been linked to heart disease, diabetes and obesity, among other health conditions. 

Previous studies showed that yam powder can also help cut inflammation that may lead to colon cancer, irritable bowel syndrome and stomach ulcers.
