THE House of Representatives's Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reforms has approved the resetting of the barangay (village) and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK or youth council) elections to the first Monday of December 2023.

On Tuesday, the committee met to discuss proposals to postpone the village and SK elections which are scheduled on December 5 of this year.

During the meeting, the committee heard resource persons, including Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman George Garcia who said that the Comelec "is ready, willing, and prepared to conduct the election whether it be this year or whether it be next year."

Garcia also said that May 2023 or December 2023 was "okay" with the Comelec.

Later during the meeting, lawmakers voted 12-2 to postpone the December 2022 village and SK elections.

The proposed postponement still has to undergo plenary consideration.

In 2019, then-president Rodrigo Duterte signed into law a measure that sought to move the May 2020 village and SK elections to Dec. 5, 2022.
