The pageant world is indeed a good source of showbiz talents. Rabiya Mateo’s crossover speaks for it. The 2020 Miss Universe Philippines and Miss Universe semi-finalist officially begins her promising acting career as Agent Asha Raj in Agimat ng Agila Season 2, although she first appeared in a Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho’s Halloween episode.

Rabiya is the new leading lady of Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. in the GMA 7 weekend fantasy drama series, which premieres tonight at 7:15.

“I’m very grateful to be a part of (it),” said the Kapuso talent, who appreciated the trust Sen. Bong and the team behind the Agimat ng Agila had given her to play the interpol agent role, in a recent press conference. “Kaya hindi ko po talaga sasayangin (So, I wouldn’t really let it go to waste). Every day I wake up, I’m always thankful because this is a blessing. Sana magtuloy-tuloy na siya.”

With her determination and enthusiasm to foray into this new field, Rabiya’s Agent Asha is just the first of the many dramatis personae she will play.

“Sabi ko nga dati isa din sa mga gusto ko ay maging Bond Girl (I’ve told myself before that becoming a Bond Girl is one of the roles I want to be) and it’s coming true,” said Rabiya, who channeled in the publicity photos the feisty, charming and clever sides of Bond Girls or any empowered women that have graced the screen.

“Sobrang bait po talaga sa set,” shared the beauty queen-turned-showbiz neophyte of her working relationship with Bong. “Hindi siya nagsasawang alalayan po ako (He never got tired of helping me out in doing scenes). Aminado ako na baguhan (ako) talaga (I’m really new in this line of work). Maalaga po siya sa lahat, lahat. I’m also grateful because I’ve learned a lot from Sen. Bong.” All the do’s and don’ts and insights from veterans like Bong are valuable for Rabiya to better understand acting as a profession.

Although the values to succeed in all endeavors are the same, Rabiya affirmed that acting in an action-packed series is a far cry from competing in a pageant.

“It’s really physically challenging,” said she. “Me being a beauty queen, there’s finesse, (you need) to have the poise and grace. With this one, you have to sweat it out, (like in) everything. I’m very happy because I enrolled myself in a boxing (class).” Aside from that, she had sessions with the show’s action director to be in tip-top shape physically and mentally. It worked wonders for her to be in Asha’s shoes.

“Sobrang layo po niya talaga sa pagiging isang beauty queen,” said Rabiya. “I’m loving the challenge. I’m loving the transition. I’m forever grateful for the opportunity.”

During her stint at the Miss Universe pageant, the local government of Iloilo also joined the rest of the country in supporting Rabiya’s campaign for the country’s fifth crown and semi-finals placement streak. She said that fellow Ilonggos are also behind her this time around.

“Actually, I just came from Iloilo and they’re excited, our local government unit also supports the project and all the promotions of Agimat ng Agila,” shared she, whose mother reminded her to give her best at work. “My Mama told me, ‘Galingan mo, anak kasi yung makakasama mo ay hindi biro (You are working with big names).’” Rabiya also shares the screen with Gardo Versoza, Elizabeth Oropesa, Betong Sumaya and GMA 7’s prized talent, Sanya Lopez.

“As long as na hindi naman makakahadlang yung love life niya, yung relationship niya dun sa career niya, ituloy niya (As long as her love life won’t stand in the way of her career, she should go for it),” Sanya advised co-star Rabiya. “Minsan kasi nakakatulong naman yung, alam mo yun, na merong inspirasyon ka habang nag-ta-trabaho. So, kung makakatulong yun para sa kanya, eh di i-go lang niya. When it comes to work, galingan lang niya, yun lang po ang masasabi ko, give your best all the time.”

Rabiya, who will take it to heart, said, “Career po talaga yung focus ko (I’m really focused on my career).”
