A Boeing 737-800 airplane of Ukrainian International Airlines crashed on Jan. 8, 2020, shortly after takeoff from Imam Khomeini Airport in Tehran, Iran, killing all 176 on board. On Jan. 9, CNN obtained a video that showed an Iranian missile being fired into the sky and hitting an object at the same time when the crash took place. After previously rejecting suggestions that one of its missiles brought down the plane, Iran’s military released a statement on Jan. 11, acknowledging it shot down the jet due to “human error.” The statement also read that those responsible would be held accountable. In a tweet, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said in a tweet that his country “deeply regrets this disastrous mistake.”
