Buying and leasing a car used to be so simple. See car; test drive car; negotiate price for car; pay for car; drive home in car; show off car to envious neighbors. Then came modern-day mobility and all its newfangled connectivity and navigation gizmos, concierge services, maintenance programs, and more, many of which involve setting up subscriptions, accounts, and payment plans to third-party service providers in addition to the financiers, insurers, and other vendors engaged heretofore. In order to attract customers wary of this increasingly burdensome process, especially younger ones, Lexus is offering a new two-year, 20,000-mile Complete Lease program for its new baby crossover, the 2019 UX, through nearly 80 participating Lexus dealers in California, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Indiana, Illinois, and Florida.

All seven 2019 UX variants are eligible for the Complete Lease, which in addition to the vehicle itself includes insurance (through Travelers); wheel and tire protection; scheduled maintenance at 5000, 10,000, 15,000, and 20,000 miles; GAP protection; and a $1000 excess wear and use allowance. Lexus spokesman Todd Blickenstaff said there is "roughly $2000 of value added," which also encompasses subscriptions to SiriusXM plus navigation and related concierge services on UX models that have it. In-car Wi-Fi charges will be extra, but other services are not passed on to the customer. The price basically includes "everything but the gas," he said.

Lexus spokesman Craig Taguchi told C/D that the Complete Lease program is being offered to drivers with no moving violations within the past year and no major violations in the past 10 years and who enjoy Tier 1 or Tier 1 Plus credit scores (690 and above, we're told) according to Lexus Financial Services. Lexus was not willing to provide an estimated Complete Lease price range for any particular UX model but said that monthly payments would roughly equal the combined cost of a standard UX lease-which is subject to negotiation between the dealer and customer-and the cost of insurance, which could vary from state to state, they said. The 2019 UX starts at $33,025 for the UX200 model with front-wheel drive; lease offers in C/D's location, Michigan, currently start at $399 per month for a two-year lease on that model, with $3999 due at signing.

With several potential payees combined into one, the Complete Lease could be as attractive for convenience-related benefits as the value added. If the program proves successful, we can expect to see it offered on other Lexus models in the future.
