Next-Generation Lincoln MKC to be Renamed Corsair in 2020

Lincoln will ditch the MKC appellation for its compact crossover when it is redesigned in 2020, giving it the name Corsair. The Lincoln Corsair, which we expect to arrive for the 2021 model year, will get the company one vehicle closer to its goal of eradicating confusing alphanumeric names from its model lineup.

The scoop, which Automotive News first reported, comes with the caveat that there’s still time for Lincoln and its Ford parent to change their minds as to the vehicle’s name. But the name Corsair has history with Ford, and the company filed a trademark application for the word last year, so it seems a likely candidate for the new MKC.

The Corsair will likely get Aviator-mini styling, with more angular headlamps than what’s currently found on the fullsize Navigator. Expect the shell grille, which made an appearance on the 2019 MKC during its midcycle refresh, to continue on. Furthermore, spy photos of the new SUV suggest it will retain its Audi-like wraparound tailgate.

Based on the next-generation Ford Escape (also due in 2020), the Corsair will likely receive a variety of powertrains, including plug-in hybrid and full-electric options. It might also follow the Aviator’s lead by offering surprising power, possibly in the form of an electric-augmented 2.3L EcoBoost I-4. Such a combination could provide 350 hp or more, with 400 lb-ft of torque coming along for the ride. That would finally give Lincoln a legitimate competitor to some of Germany’s hottest small luxury SUVs.

Expect to hear more about the 2021 Corsair over the next several months, with a concept-preview reveal as early as the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show this November.
