Our third day of testing eight trucks on the 2019 Truck Trend Pickup Truck of the Year competition involved a lot of driving, coffee, snacks, and energy drinks. While we didn’t exactly keep tabs on the amount of caffeine consumed, we did watch our fuel gauges on the trucks.

The purpose of Day Three testing is to compare fuel economy on the trucks. Fuel consumption is critical in scoring. We closely keep track of how many gallons our 1/2-ton trucks guzzle at each fill-up. Fuel logs are monitored and signed off on. The drive also gives us time to get familiar with each truck’s features and how they handle on the road.

The fuel economy drive takes us 180 miles up the California coast from our El Segundo offices through Santa Barbara and into the Pismo State Beach recreation area. The Pismo State Beach recreation area is the only place in California that allows you to drive on the actual beach. The area has large dunes to the south and is popular with off-road enthusiasts.

After an escort from the park rangers, we literally ran the trucks through the ocean, took a bunch of amazing photos for the magazine, and also a dozen selfies for our social media accounts to make our coworkers back at the office jealous of our day. Then it was a quick stop for lunch and straight to the carwash. Salt, paint, and aluminum don’t mix. It would be a shame if we returned a pile of rusty 2019 1/2-tons back to the OEMs after our test.

Our drive back to Los Angeles took us the back route going east from Santa Maria over to Interstate 5. We burned roughly 170 miles, making our grand total for the day an estimated 350 miles of driving. Stay tuned to see what we have coming up next on our test.
