CEO JIM FARLEY ASKS THE WORLD IF FORD SHOULD MAKE A STREET-LEGAL MUSTANG GT3
The S650 Ford Mustang Dark Horse GT3 program is turning out to be an epic creation. A few days ago, Ford CEO Jim Farley posted a short video of the new race car testing at Sebring Raceway. Roaring Coyote V8 and all. Then, a few hours later, the executive retweeted his initial tweet and asked if Ford should make a road version of this absolutely insane creation.
Research
Ford Performance already has plans to sell customers turn-key tack cars in the form of the Mustang Dark Horse S and Mustang Dark Horse R. Multimatic, no longer building the Ford GT supercar, will construct these track star muscle cars, along with the Ford Bronco DR race truck that well-heeled customers can also buy. This means a road version isn’t entirely out of the picture, though it may come at a seriously hefty price.
How much of the S650 Ford Mustang GT3 could be translated into a street-legal vehicle is unclear. Either way, we’re down with it.
The new Ford Mustang Dark Horse name will be found in various racing leagues all over the globe. This includes Australia’s Supercars, NASCAR, NHRA drag racing, FIA GT4 class racing, and an exclusive Dark Horse spec series. The S650 Ford Mustang Dark Horse GT3 is being developed to compete in the World Endurance Championship’s GT class starting in 2024. The new race car will be the basis for the other S650 Mustang-based race cars in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GT classes. It will go head to head against Corvettes, Aston Martins, BMWs, Mercedes-Benz AMGs, and the Porsche 911.
The Ford Mustang GT3 will be powered by a modified version of the 5.0-liter Coyote V8 developed in-house by Ford Performance. However, it will be supplied by M-Sport, a British motorsport and engineering company that developed Ford’s most recent rally cars. Watching this thing race around a track and listening to the engine excites us for the upcoming racing seasons in which this car will participate.
