Meet Harley-Davidson’s Newest CVO, The 2020 Tri Glide

We don't often include three-wheelers on this site, but this one felt like pretty big news—at least from Harley's standpoint. That's because the new 2020 CVO Tri Glide is the first three-wheeler to make the cut and be included in The Motor Company's uber-exclusive CVO club. Yep, for 2020, the new CVO Tri Glide model joins the Limited and Street Glide two-wheelers in the high-end, limited-production, super-premium category.

You sort of had to have seen it coming, no? I mean, The Motor Company says this is the most-requested model in the history of Custom Vehicle Operations, so it was only a matter of time before popular opinion moved the needle. The trike, naturally, is awash with all sorts of premium components and up-spec tech, like a top-of-the-line Boom! Box GTS infotainment system with premium speakers, as well as a Boom! Audio 30K Bluetooth headset to control all the goods wirelessly. But H-D says this “ultimate three-wheeler” is set up for touring too, so you’ll also find creature comforts like heated rider and passenger seats, a touring rack, backlit handlebar controls (very nice), a CB radio, and lots of other high-end goodies as well (we’ll list ’em later).

Although H-D says the CVO Tri Glide was “designed from the wheels up for a three-wheeled motorcycle,” it does share many of its components with the standard Tri Glide, like the chassis, premium touring suspension, and an integrated (power-locking) trunk with 4.4 cubic feet of space topped by a Tour-Pak, for a total of 6.8 cubic feet of storage capacity. But it does get unique custom wheels (19 inches versus 16 up front), and it sits a bit lower, plus there’s a light for the Tour-Pak as well as an included rack on top to accommodate extra goods, and custom-fit luggage inserts and organizers.

The CVO Tri Glide model is also equipped with the Trike-specific Reflex Defensive Rider Systems (RDRS) and the aforementioned Boom! infotainment system with four Boom! Stage I two-way speakers tucked into the fairing and Tour-Pak, all powered by a single, four-channel, 300-watt RMS amplifier. You even get a CB radio to round out the communication options, and the Tri Glide is prewired for H-D Connect service, which lets you access bike info remotely. Most importantly, let’s not forget that all CVO bikes come exclusively with the Milwaukee-Eight 117 powertrain, which has the most displacement and power from the H-D factory.

Yes, yes, hold on—there’s more. The newest CVO also gets LED lighting all around, which includes a Daymaker headlamp, fog lamps, tail/brake lamps, and signals, as well as a low-profile shield to punch a hole in the atmosphere. A Ventilator air cleaner (with insert) beautifies the right side, with Kahuna Collection accessories—heated rider grips, pegs, rider and passenger floorboards, and muffler tips—to cap off the premium vibe. A slimmer front fender reveals more of the custom 19-inch Tomahawk Contrast Cut wheel, with an 18-incher out back. Got all that?

The 2020 CVO Tri Glide comes in a choice of two premium custom paint finishes: Blizzard White with a three-stripe graphic pattern, Gray Contrast Cut wheels, and Bright Chrome finishes; or Black Stardust with a three-stripe graphic pattern, Gloss Black Contrast Cut wheels, and Bright Chrome finishes. Since this is a CVO machine, it’ll cost you: The base MSRP is $48,999.

Don’t worry, there are still two-wheelers living in that rarified group to ladle on even more CVO bling for 2020. Joining the CVO Tri Glide are the CVO Street Glide and CVO Limited models, both returning from the 2019 lineup.

Research

The 2020 CVO Street Glide keeps its swagger intact, with cool custom styling and details returning to run the show and a bumping audio system to provide the soundtrack. Its new features include Fugitive cast-aluminum wheels, a low-profile two-piece tank console, and a Heavy Breather air cleaner with two different color options. Smoked mid-frame air deflectors and billet fairing-mount mirrors complete the changes for 2020.

But where the CVOs really bring their A game is with the new paint and styling options they introduce every year, and this one’s no different. For 2020, the CVO Street Glide offers three new paint and style options:

1) Black Stardust Fade to Stormcloud with subtle graphics highlighted by Satin Chrome and Bright Chrome finishes, and Fugitive wheels finished in Gloss Black/Satin. This one comes with a Ventilator air cleaner.

2) Smoky Gray and Black Hole with 1970s/race-inspired graphics highlighted by Gloss Black, Satin Black, and Black Onyx finishes. The Fugitive wheels are finished in Denim Black/Gloss Black, and this treatment comes with a Gloss Black Heavy Breather air cleaner.

3) The last option is a Premium Sand Dune monotone finish with pearl top coat and graphics highlighted by Smoked Satin Chrome, Gloss Black, and Black Onyx finishes. Fugitive wheels are in a Gloss Black/Smoked Satin, complemented by a Gloss Black Heavy Breather air cleaner.

Base price for the 2020 CVO Street Glide model is $40,539.

Meanwhile, the CVO Limited is already fully equipped to take on even the most gnarly of long-distance hauls, so Harley pretty much left well enough alone for 2020. The few minor tweaks for this year’s model include the addition of the Reflex Defensive Rider Systems (RDRS), fresh rider and passenger seat cover material and stitching, and new smoked mid-frame air deflectors. What hasn’t changed is that bitchin’ Milwaukee-Eight 117 (1,923cc) powerplant with a high-performance camshaft, helping the beastly motor crank out a claimed 125 pound-feet of torque.

You do get three new paint/styling options for the 2020 CVO Limited as well:

There’s Moonlight Blue with Deep Sea Blue Accents with two-tone and panel-style paint highlighted by Satin Chrome/Bright Chrome finishes and new graphics and medallions with Tomahawk wheels finished in Contrast Gloss Black/Satin.

Then there’s Smoky Gray with Stormcloud Accents with two-tone and panel-style paint highlighted by Gloss Black, Satin Black, and Black Onyx finishes and new graphics, with Tomahawk wheels in Contrast Denim Black/Gloss Black.

Finally there’s a Premium Sand Dune monotone finish with pearl top coat and graphics highlighted by Smoked Satin Chrome, Gloss Black, and Black Onyx finishes; the Tomahawk wheels are finished in Gloss Black/Smoked Satin.

The base price for the 2020 CVO Limited is $44,039.

All the 2020 CVOs are also updated with Harley’s latest tech features, which come standard. The upgrades include the H-D Connect Service, a cell-based system that keeps riders connected to their motorcycle via their smartphone using the Harley-Davidson app; the Reflex Defensive Rider Systems (RDRS), a collection of various technology systems designed to match motorcycle performance to available traction during acceleration, deceleration, and braking, via chassis control, electronic brake control, and powertrain technology; and the Daymaker Adaptive LED Headlamp (which you’ll find on the CVO Limited and CVO Street Glide models, but not the Tri Glide). The Daymaker Adaptive Headlamp brings patented, integrated sensors and electronics as well as 12 additional LED lights that activate based on the lean of the bike to project light into corners.

Lastly, all three CVOs for 2020 will be shipped with a single Boom! Audio 30K Bluetooth Helmet Headset designed for the Boom! Box GTS system. The new headset features Mesh Intercom Network wireless communication technology—which is a mouthful, but basically can automatically connect to a number of riders while in public mode, or connect with up to 16 riders in private mode up to 5 miles. You can utilize the same functions as a wired headset (CB, phone, navigation prompts, radio, and audio, with voice commands) as well as handle the Apple Car Play microphone requirement for the Boom! Box GTS. Thanks to the Quick Charge feature, you can get five hours of additional talk time with a 20-minute charge.
