10 Things To Know Before Buying The 2022 Ram 2500 HD Crew Cab Diesel

The Ram 2500 HD Crew Cab Diesel is one of the best-selling heavy-duty trucks out there and is now available in the 2022 iteration for a starting price of $40,865. Coming in 7 trim configurations, the 2022 Ram 2500 HD Crew Cab Diesel comes with quite a lot of upgrades when compared to the outgoing 2021 model. However, the impressive Cummins turbodiesel inline-6 motor coupled with a smooth-shifting automatic transmission still provides the best in class towing and payload capacities, making it highly impressive.


This full-size pickup truck comes with a new Uconnect 5 infotainment system, and that does feel more modern and offers more features as standard. There are also major changes to the trims and optional packages. More standard interior, exterior, and safety features are onboard too. Competing with the likes of the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, Ford F-250 Super Duty, and GMC Sierra 2500HD, here are 10 things you need to know before buying the 2022 Ram 2500 HD Crew Cab Diesel.

Torquey Diesel Motor

The 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel inline-6 motor under the hood of the 2022 Ram 2500 HD Crew Cab Diesel produces 370 hp and 850 lb-ft of torque. This motor comes mated to a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission and can be had in either RWD or 4WD drivetrains.

Even though this full-size pickup truck turned out to be one of the heaviest of the segment, the Cummins diesel motor hides the weight very well, making it a hoot to drive around. There is no noticeable turbo lag, and the massive torque means that overtaking is effortless. The maximum towing capacity of 20,000 lbs is the highest in the segment. The 0-60 mph time of under 8 seconds is superior to many of the rivals with a diesel motor, too.

Luxurious Cabin

If you go with the lower trims like the Tradesman and Big Horn, the interior quality and overall refinement turned out to be on the lower side. However, get the Laramie trim or higher, and you would be impressed with the beautiful full-black or brown and beige-colored interior. The cabin looks elegant, and it features soft-touch materials at most of the touchpoints.

The seats are wrapped in leather and the suede inserts with contrast stitching and piping make it look and feel premium. Even if you get the mid-spec trims, the leather armrest and soft plastic and aluminum on the door cards and dashboard add to the premium factor. We also loved the chrome elements and faux carbon fiber accents. However, the center console does feel a bit hard in comparison to the rest of the cabin materials.

Surprisingly Pliant Ride Quality

The ride quality has never been a strong point of any of the heavy-duty diesel trucks out there. However, the 2022 Ram 2500 HD Crew Cab Diesel isn't as harsh as you think. We found the low-speed ride to be adequately comfortable, absorbing most of the road undulations and potholes. Only the biggest of the potholes get filtered into the cabin.

The suspension also works almost silently. The independent front and rear multi-link suspension are more modern than some of the competitors in the segment, which comes with a leaf spring solid axle rear setup. During high-speed driving, the ride is relatively flat, with no major vertical movement. If you get the optional auto-leveling air suspension for the rear, the ride is even better. The body roll isn't excessive, either.

Space Hasn't Been Compromised

The front row of the 2022 Ram 2500 HD Crew Cab Diesel offered excellent room for adults of any size and shape. The headroom and legroom are up there with the best, and the long list of storage spaces makes it very versatile too. The center console and under-armrest can hold more stuff than any other rivals. The door pockets are wide as well. We also loved the well-bolstered leather seats on offer, which are supremely supportive during long drives.

The Crew Cab version gets you more than enough headroom and legroom at the rear seat. The shoulder room is also excellent, helping to seat three in the rear with ease. There is a soft opening tailgate, and when opened, it is going to offer you a bed that is 8" long with the Crew Cab variant. It has a cargo area of 74.7 cu ft, which is the best in the segment. There are all the other cargo bed features like power outlets, LED lights, and bed lining.

Butch Exterior Styling

We have always been a fan of the Night Edition package offered by Ram, and when that is selected, the 2022 Ram 2500 HD Crew Cab Diesel looks stunning. The blacked-out elements in this package gel well with the overall proportions of this massive pickup truck, and what you get is more road presence than with the rivals.

The wide and imposing front fascia with a neat Ram logo coupled with a black grille, air dam, and giant tow hooks adds to the aggressive design language. The best-in-class ground clearance, beefy 20" wheels (depending on the trim), and the neat branding round off the profile. The 260.8" length is more than all the rivals, too. However, the rear end remains a bit bland.

Great Refinement For A Diesel

The refinement level is much higher than what most folks would expect from a truck with a diesel motor under the hood. The beefy sound-deadening materials under the hood do help silencing the diesel clatter very well. As a result, it doesn't sound like a Freightliner Cascadia from the outside. The vibrations and harshness are not going to be a deal-breaker too.

When you are inside the cabin, the active noise cancellation system and acoustic glasses do a wonderful job of ironing out the diesel clatter. Even though there is a constant hum from the engine, which is also present in all the rivals, we found the overall refinement to be a level higher than the rivals from Ford, GMC, and Chevrolet. The wind noise, road noise, and tire noise are on the lower side too.

Not Going To Be Very Frugal

The fuel efficiency of the Ram 2500 HD Crew cab when equipped with the gasoline V8 motor turned out to be quite low, which was comparable to the rivals. Even if you opt for the Cummins diesel motor, the fuel efficiency doesn't see a major rise. Though the EPA hasn't revealed the gas mileage numbers yet, we expect this heavy-duty truck to do around 15 MPG combined.

With 31 gallons of fuel tank capacity, the 2022 Ram 2500 HD Crew Cab Diesel has the potential to do 481 miles of combined range on a full tank. However, the rivals like the Ford F-250 Super Duty Crew Cab and the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Diesel Crew Caw offer a bigger fuel tank capacity of 36 and 34 gallons, resulting in a superior range.

Comes With The Latest Uconnect Infotainment

The 2022 Ram 2500 HD Crew Cab Diesel comes with a new Uconnect 5 infotainment system, replacing the older Uconnect 4C infotainment. The user interface is spot on and there are no stutters and lags while using the system. The interface is very easy and everything is placed where it is supposed to be. Both the displays (depending on the trim you opt for) are of good quality too.

We also admire the long list of connectivity and entertainment features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM radio, navigation, voice recognition, USB, aux, Bluetooth, and an active noise cancellation system. Both the 9-speaker Alpine audio system and the 17-speaker Harman Kardon audio system provides punchy bass.

Long List Of Driver-Assistance Features

If you get the highest Limited trim of the 2022 Ram 2500 HD Crew Cab Diesel, you would get many driver-assistance features, such as blind spot monitoring system, rear collision warning, tire pressure monitoring system, ParkView backup camera, and ParkSense front and rear parking sensors. All the other basic safety features are standard throughout the trims configurations.

However, we would recommend you to get the optional safety group for an additional $1,785, as it comes with many more driver-assistance techs like adaptive cruise control, adaptive steering, digital rearview mirror, a full-speed forward collision warning, and lane-keeping assist. The truck also received an overall crash safety rating of 4-stars in the NHTSA crash test.

Sure-Footed Braking Behavior

The braking performance of the 2022 Ram 2500 HD Crew Cab Diesel is one of the best of the segment. We found the 4-wheel disc brake setup with ABS, EBD, brake assist, and front and rear ventilated rotors to be more than enough to anchor the truck down from high speeds with ease.

The truck stops in a straight line under hard braking, and the ABS does its job pretty well. It has less front-end dive than all the rivals, and the initial bite and braking progression are superb too. The 70-0 mph braking distance of 200 feet is better than the Ford F-250 Super Duty Diesel, which is one of its arch-rivals.
