2014 Motor Trend Car of the Year Contender: Fiat 500L

After the 2014 Fiat 500L made its way through the Motor Trend Car of the Year competition, some judges couldn't help but describe it as quirky. As its name suggests, the 500L is based on the pint-sized 500 subcompact and attempts to retain its Italian style, but in a larger package. Did Fiat succeed? Yes and no.

For starters, the 500L's quirky driving characteristics were due to its 160-hp, 1.4-liter MultiAir turbo-four that seemed adequate for the large hatch. However, the 500L tended to wobble through the turns, despite its surprisingly stable ride at high speeds.

Inside, editors liked the infotainment system, overall ergonomics, and the climate-controlled glovebox. A few difficult-to-overlook issues included the oddly shaped gearshift knob, upright driving position, and the emergency brake handle that is somewhat hidden beneath the driver's seat armrest.
