A man riding a lawn mower died after a car crash caused a vehicle to veer off the road and hit him, Dallas police said Monday.

According to police, a 22-year-old Dallas man was traveling at an intersection in north Oak Cliff at a high speed when his blue Honda Civic collided with an occupied black pickup truck.

The blue car veered off the road from the impact and hit Armando Leija Esparza, 48, who was riding on his lawn mower.

The driver of the blue car and Leija Esparza were both taken to a local hospital, police said, where Leija Esparza died from his injuries.

The 68-year-old driver of the black pickup truck was not injured.

Police said the man driving the pickup truck was stopped at the intersection of Winnetka Avenue and West Jefferson Boulevard for a stop sign. He began crossing when his pickup was hit by the blue Honda Civic.

Police did not say whether the 22-year-old driver of the Civic was required to stop by a stop sign or not.

In a Facebook post after the death Monday, Dallas City Council member Chad West, who represents the area of Oak Cliff in District 1 where the crash occurred, called for "traffic calming" efforts.

"This unnecessary, tragic death makes it more clear than ever that we have to do something about the speeding on our roadways," West said on Facebook.
