A magazine advertisement for the 1984 Renault Encore, the American Motors-built hatchback version of the Alliance.
After American Motors proved just small enough to fail in the eyes of the American government in the late 1970s, France stepped in to offer a partnership with then-state-owned Renault. The result was some interesting Franco-Wisconsonian machinery, including the Premier (the chassis of which was used to underpin many Chryslers later on) and the Alliance/Encore. Based on the Renault 9, the Encore was the hatchback version of this cheap-yet-modern economy car.

The Encore didn't shake up the American car-buying world, of course, and AMC got snarfed up by Chrysler as a means to obtain the Jeep brand plus the engineering of the Premier chassis.
