Earlier this year, Smart announced plans to stop selling gas-powered cars in the U.S.Instead, Smart plans to focus solely on electric cars here in the 'States. And based on the teaser Smart just posted to Instagram, we'll get our first look at the brand new electric Smart ForTwo at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show.

Details are scarce at the moment, and the teaser doesn't reveal much other than a gaping front end and a new headlight design that may or may not make it to production. There could still be gas-powered versions since Mercedes has only said it will go all-electric in the U.S. and Canada, but the lightning emoji hashtag suggests the show car will be electric. Also, the future is now if you believe one of the other hashtags.

As we learned in a recent First Drive, the current electric Smart ForTwo is "easily the best of the new Smart lineup" thanks to being "smoother, quicker, and quieter than its internal combustion engine powered siblings." Unfortunately, it has less than 100 miles of range and carries a price tag that's uncomfortably close to that of the larger Chevrolet Bolt. You'll also likely have a harder time finding a Smart dealer since two-thirds of them were recently closed. While there were 85 dealers in the U.S., only 27 will continue selling new vehicles. The rest will only keep their service centers.

Will the new Smart ForTwo come in at a more affordable price? Will it offer a more competitive range? We still can't say, but Smart's going to have to offer something more compelling if it wants to draw customers away from the Chevrolet Bolt and its aggressive lease deals.
