Rivian Is Getting Back on Track

Rivian revealed its second quarter production numbers this week, amid a remarkably tumultuous time in the EV industry that has already produced plenty of setbacks for just about all automakers. The company stated that it has produced 4401 vehicles in this three-month period ending in June, while delivering 4467 vehicles.

Rivian did not reveal a model breakdown for these numbers, but it's worth nothing that besides the familiar R1T truck and R1S sport utility, Rivian also produces electric vans for Amazon, dubbed EDV 700.

Overall, this is a positive bit of news for the company that has seen plenty of rough seas in the first two quarters of this year, delivering just 1227 vehicles in the first quarter while producing 2553.

It still has a long way to go, however, to meet its overall production goal for 2022, leaving itself quite a bit of work for the second half of the year.

"These figures remain in line with the company's expectations, and it believes it is on track to deliver on the 25,000 annual production guidance previously provided," Rivian said in a statement.

At the moment, Rivian has produced just under 7000 vehicles through the end of the second quarter, leaving itself six months to catch up.

Rivian's progress this year has seen setbacks due to the ongoing chip shortage, as well as the rising cost of raw materials. During one week in March the company revealed higher-than-expected pricing, citing rising costs, and was forced to walk it back just days later after reservation holders expressed their displeasure on social media.

If Rivian achieves its goal of producing 25,000 vehicles this year, it will still need to increase production next year, as the company has over 90,000 pre-orders for its two main consumer-oriented models. A second factory in Georgia will eventually help it do that, but it needs to be built first, with the automaker set to rely on its Normal, Illinois, plant for the next couple of years.
