Toyota announced a new Trailhunter trim for its trucks at SEMA 2022 on Tuesday, promising a factory-built rig designed to support the growing community of overlanders. To give us a taste of what's coming, the company showed off a Tundra Trailhunter concept at the show.

The concept features a Trailhunter-specific suspension, skid plates, a specialty roof rack, a fridge, and a rooftop tent. This vision, however, includes additional dealer accessories, not just what will come stock on the truck. Toyota says the base trucks will be built around off-road ability, protection, and load-bearing capability, which buyers can customize into their own ideal overlander. Given how popular modified Toyotas already are on the trail, building a trim designed to be modified makes a lot of sense.

What's unclear is whether designing the trucks for load-bearing capability and heavy modifications will lead to an increased maximum payload capacity. The Toyota Tacoma has long been criticized for its low payload. A 4x4 TRD Off-Road Double Cab model can haul just 1155 lbs, which doesn't include passengers or fuel. For reference, a Ford Maverick with either engine can carry 1500 lbs. So, loading a Tacoma up with passengers, fuel, a fridge, and a roof tent is bound to exceed the current truck's payload. We're hoping this trim is an excuse to give it a much-needed bump.

We may have to wait to learn, as Toyota says more details about the Trailhunter trucks will be released next year. In the meantime, we've reached out to a spokesperson to see if the Trailhunter trim will include higher max payloads.
