Wrentham's police and fire departments responded to the two-car crash around 7:49 p.m. in the area of East Street and Common Street and found both vehicles in the middle of the road, heavily damaged.

According to Wrentham police, a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was driving north on Route 140 towards Wrentham Center when it attempted to veer left onto Common Street. When the truck crossed oncoming traffic, on Route 140 southbound, it struck a Hyundai Elantra head on.

The pickup truck passenger sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash and was flown by medical helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital Trauma Center, where she later died. The pickup truck driver was not seriously injured, police said.

The Elantra driver suffered serious injuries and was also taken to Rhode Island Hospital Trauma Center.

The woman who died has not been identified, but police extended their sincere condolences to her loved ones in a statement on Saturday.

According to police, the area where the fatal crash occurred is known as a troublesome spot.

"I know plans have been floated to redesigning this intersection over the years, as far as when that will ever happen, I don't know," Chief Bill McGrath said. "I will say it's a tricky intersection."

The crash and its cause remain under investigation, but no charges have been filed at this time, police said.
