The 2019 Ford Fusion finishes in the middle of our midsize car rankings. The Fusion has a comfortable interior and is more athletic than several class rivals, but it’s held back by an uninspiring base engine and a safety score that is lower than many of its competitors.

Is the 2019 Ford Fusion a Good Used Car?

Yes, the 2019 Fusion is a good used midsize car. It's fun to drive thanks to its energetic turbocharged engines and agile handling. It also has supportive seats and a large trunk, and it’s available with the easy-to-use SYNC 3 infotainment system.

The Fusion isn't perfect, however. Its list of standard infotainment features could hardly be shorter, and the base engine fails to impress in most driving situations.

There are two other Fusion models available with alternative powertrains: the 2019 Ford Fusion Hybrid and the 2019 Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid. We review these models separately.

2018 vs. 2019 Ford Fusion: What's the Difference?

For 2019, Ford dropped the Platinum trim from the Fusion lineup and expanded the availability of some of its turbocharged engines. Which Used Ford Fusion Trim Is Right for Me?

The 2019 Ford Fusion comes in five trims: S, SE, SEL, Titanium, and V6 Sport. The Fusion SE makes a great choice for most buyers. It comes with the most fuel-efficient EcoBoost engine and several infotainment features beyond what comes in the base trim. If you want a little more in the way of comfort, step up to the SEL trim. If all-wheel drive is a must-have, then your choices are limited to the SE and Titanium trims with the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine or the V6 Sport trim.

We review the Ford Fusion Hybrid and Ford Fusion Energi separately.

2019 Ford Fusion Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2019 Ford Fusion or 2019 Toyota Camry?

The 2019 Toyota Camry is arguably the best car in the class, and it's better than the Fusion. On the performance front, the Camry has punchy powertrain options and nimble handling, and it gets great gas mileage. Inside, this Toyota is stylish and well-built, with two rows of spacious seats. The Camry also earns a higher safety score than the Fusion. However, the Ford has a couple of advantages over the Toyota. It has slightly more trunk space and offers Android Auto.

Which Is Better: 2019 Ford Fusion or 2019 Honda Accord?

The Fusion finishes above the 2019 Honda Accord in our midsize car rankings, but an argument can be made that the Honda is the better car. The Accord features an upscale interior with two rows of expansive, comfortable seats. It also boasts a great safety score. It comes with plenty of standard and available features, and this Honda is one of the few midsize cars with more trunk space than the Fusion. The Accord also has the edge in driving dynamics, with plenty of power and smooth handling. The cherry on top is the Fusion’s outstanding fuel economy. The Fusion pulls ahead in our rankings in part because of its superior predicted reliability rating of 3.5 out of five compared to the Accord's 2.5, as well as its lower ownership costs.

2019 Fusion Performance

How Does the 2019 Ford Fusion Drive?

The Fusion has four engine options to choose from. The 175-horsepower base engine feels underpowered, so you'll likely be more satisfied with one of the three EcoBoost turbocharged options.

The two turbo-fours have plenty of power and help deliver quick acceleration, but the twin-turbo in the Fusion V6 Sport is the star of the lineup. It's one of the strongest engines in the class. The Fusion provides a comfortable ride over most roads, and it handles well, leading to a more engaging driving experience than you'll get with most competitors.

We review the 2019 Ford Fusion Hybrid and the plug-in-hybrid 2019 Ford Fusion Energi separately.

Does the 2019 Ford Fusion Get Good Gas Mileage?

Regardless of which powertrain you select, there are several other midsize cars that get better fuel economy than this Ford. The Fusion gets its best gas mileage with the smaller EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, while its worst ratings come when it’s outfitted with the EcoBoost V6.

How Many People Does the 2019 Fusion Seat?

The 2019 Fusion seats five people in two rows. The cabin looks nice and utilizes some soft-touch materials, but the higher trims are more upscale than the lower models. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, and there's plenty of head- and legroom. The rear seats aren't as spacious, but two adults can ride back there with no issues.

How Many Child Car Seats Fit in the 2019 Ford Fusion?

The 2019 Fusion has two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connectors for the rear outboard seats and an upper tether for the rear middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the second-lowest rating of Marginal for ease of use. The lower anchors are set too deeply in the seats and can be difficult to maneuver around.

2019 Ford Fusion Features

You'd be hard-pressed to envision a shorter standard features list than the Fusion's, though the basic SYNC infotainment system works reasonably well. The available SYNC 3 system is better though. It comes with many more features, including smartphone connectivity options like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and its touch screen responds quickly to inputs.
