Solid crash-test results from both NHTSA and IIHS should earn the RX attention from safety-minded consumers. Standard active-safety features add more incentive to buy, but a more comprehensive offering of driver aids could give the RX a higher rating from us in this category.

Blind-spot monitoring is now offered as an option on the entry-level RX, and Lexus’s Enform Safety and Service Connect telematics systems are now complimentary for 10 years. Unfortunately, the RX loses its Top Safety Pick+ designation this year-it has been downgraded to Top Safety Pick-as a result of IIHS’s changes in its testing regimen, which now includes a passenger-side small-overlap crash test.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the nonprofit, independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) evaluate vehicles for crashworthiness in the United States. NHTSA assigns cars an overall rating out of five stars. IIHS uses a different set of tests, grades cars on a scale of Good to Poor, and awards the vehicles that perform best across its tests with Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ honors, the latter of which requires that the subject’s automated forward-collision-braking system performs well.
