The 2019 Jaguar XF finishes in the bottom half of our luxury midsize car rankings. It's powerful and stylish, but it doesn't quite have the overall excellence of many of its classmates.

The 2019 Jaguar XF is ranked:

Is the Jaguar XF a Good Car?

Yes, the Jaguar XF is a pretty good car. It's comfortable and more fun to drive than some class rivals. This Jaguar also scores well in some practical areas like fuel economy as well as passenger and cargo space. However, the XF’s ranking suffers because there are competitors that surpass the Jaguar in most areas. Even in its strong suits, the XF doesn't rank among the class leaders for many categories.

Should I Buy the Jaguar XF?

It's certainly not a bad choice, but you should be sure that you want the XF before buying it. Aside from the reasons listed above, the XF also has a higher starting price than many cars in the class, meaning that it doesn't deliver as much bang for your buck. If you like the XF, you may want to see how it stacks up to rivals like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series.

Should I Buy a New or Used Jaguar XF?

The 2019 XF belongs to a generation that began with the 2016 model year. The 2019 model gets a larger, 10-inch standard touch screen instead of the 8-inch and adds a new trim to the lineup: the 300 Sport, which features a 296-horsepower engine.

The 2018 XF saw its fair share of changes as well, including a new turbo-four base engine, the addition of a wagon body style, new available driver assistance features like blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, and driver drowsiness monitoring.

You can potentially save thousands of dollars by buying a used Jaguar XF. Just note that the further back you go, the more limited your powertrain, technology, and body style options will be. For more information, check out our reviews on the 2017 and 2018 XF, as well as our Used Car Deals page.

How Much Does the Jaguar XF Cost?

Jaguar XF Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: Jaguar XF or Mercedes Benz E-Class?

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is arguably the most opulent car in the class. Its cabin is beautiful and well-crafted, seat comfort is outstanding, and there are plenty of easy-to-use tech features. The E-Class isn't as fuel-efficient as the XF, but it offers several powerful engines and handles well. The Mercedes costs a bit more, but it's worth the extra money.

Which Is Better: Jaguar XF or BMW 5 Series?

The BMW 5 Series finishes near the top of our class rankings because it excels in almost every area. It's powerful and athletic, making it one of the most fun-to-drive cars in the class. It rides smoothly, looks great inside, and offers plenty of technology. The XF’s only real advantages over the 5 Series are fuel economy and trunk space. Like the Mercedes, this BMW costs more than the XF – but it’s worth it.

XF Interior

How Many People Does the XF Seat?

This Jaguar seats five in sedan and wagon body styles. The front seats are comfortable, though some rivals offer more seating upgrades. No matter where you sit, you'll have plenty of head- and legroom.

XF and Car Seats

There are two full sets of LATCH connectors for installing car seats. The rear middle seat has a tether anchor but no lower anchors.

XF Interior Quality

The XF's cabin is stylish and inviting. There are lots of top-end materials, giving it the luxurious look and feel that you want from a car in this class.

XF Cargo Space

No other luxury midsize car can match the XF's 19.1 cubic feet of trunk space. That's enough room for the whole family's vacation luggage or a few beach chairs and a cooler. The XF Sportbrake is even roomier, providing nearly 32 cubic feet of room with the rear seats up and almost 70 cubic feet with them folded down.

XF Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

The XF comes standard with the InControl Touch infotainment system that includes a 10-inch touch screen, an 11-speaker Meridian sound system, Bluetooth, and HD Radio. Available features include navigation, a 17-speaker Meridian surround-sound system, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and quad-zone automatic climate control.

The standard 10-inch touch screen is easy to see, and the InControl system works well in general. However, many rivals offer smartphone connectivity features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that this Jaguar lacks.

XF Performance

XF Engine: Plenty of Options

The base 247-horsepower turbo-four engine moves the XF without any problems, but you have plenty of other options as well. There are models featuring either a 296-horsepower turbo-four or a 380-horsepower supercharged V6, both of which are quicker and more powerful, though they still can't match some rivals' high-performance engines.

There's also a 180-horsepower turbodiesel that gets the best fuel economy in the lineup. The XF Sportbrake comes with a 300-horsepower supercharged four-cylinder.

XF Gas Mileage: One of the Best in the Class

The XF gets 25 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway with its base engine. Those numbers exceed the ratings of almost every competitor. The available turbodiesel fares even better, earning 31/42 mpg city/highway.

Compared to rivals like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series, you'll save at least $100 per year on gas with the XF.

XF Ride and Handling: A Delight to Drive

This is one of the sportiest cars in the class. The XF feels planted and balanced around turns, making it more fun to drive than many sedans. It also delivers a smooth ride, even over rough pavement.

XF Reliability

Is the Jaguar XF Reliable?

The 2019 XF does not yet have a predicted reliability rating from J.D. Power.

Jaguar XF Warranty

Jaguar covers the XF with a five-year/60,000-mile warranty.

XF Safety

XF Crash Test Results

The 2019 XF has not yet been put through crash tests by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

XF Safety Features

The XF comes with a rearview camera and emergency brake assist. Available driver assistance features include adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera system, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, driver drowsiness monitoring, blind spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, a head-up display, rear cross traffic alert, park assist, and parking sensors on the front, sides, and rear.

Which Jaguar XF Model Is Right for Me?

The XF gains a new trim for 2019 – the 300 Sport – bringing its lineup total to seven models. There are five sedan trims and two wagon trims. Every trim offers all-wheel drive, but it comes standard in the XF S sedan and the two XF Sportbrake trims. The higher trims come with more features, and many of them also have more powerful engines. This could be a good thing or an unnecessary expense, depending on how you look at it.

For many buyers, the Prestige trim makes a great choice. It provides more features than the base trim, but it still costs significantly less than the highest trims in the lineup. You might also consider the new 300 Sport trim, which comes with a stronger engine and a few more active safety features than the lower trims, while still costing a few thousand less than the top trims.

Jaguar XF Premium

The XF Premium carries a base price of $49,965. It comes with a 247-horsepower turbo-four engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and rear-wheel drive. Standard features include synthetic leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, a rearview camera, emergency brake assist, and the InControl Touch infotainment system with a 10-inch touch screen, an 11-speaker Meridian sound system, Bluetooth, and HD Radio.

Jaguar XF Prestige

The XF Prestige sports a starting price of $54,985. In addition to the base trim's features, the Prestige comes with heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, navigation, and front and rear parking sensors.

Jaguar XF 300 Sport

The XF 300 Sport is a new trim for 2019 that starts at $63,810. It comes with a 296-horsepower turbo-four, power-adjustable front sport seats, satellite radio, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and driver drowsiness monitoring. The 300 Sport also has some unique styling touches.

Jaguar XF Portfolio

The XF Portfolio has a starting price of $67,565. Standard features include ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a 17-speaker Meridian audio system, and a head-up display.

Jaguar XF S

The range-topping XF S starts at $67,625 and features a 380-horsepower supercharged V6. The S trim comes with the Prestige and R-Sport trims’ standard features and adds an adaptive dynamics suspension system, 20-inch wheels, and unique interior and exterior finishes.

Jaguar XF Sportbrake

The XF Sportbrake is this Jaguar's wagon body style. It comes in two different trims: Sportbrake Prestige, which starts at $64,575, and Sportbrake S, which starts at $71,215. All-wheel drive comes standard in both trims. The Prestige features a 300-horsepower supercharged four-cylinder, while the S features the same 380-horsepower engine as its sedan counterpart.

Standard features in the Sportbrake include a hands-free power liftgate, heated front seats, rear parking sensors, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, park assist, driver drowsiness monitoring, and the InControl infotainment system with an 8-inch touch screen, navigation, and Bluetooth.

The Final Call

The 2019 Jaguar XF is a comfortable sedan that's fun to drive, and that makes it a solid choice. However, the XF doesn't do much to separate itself from other cars in this incredibly competitive class. That's why it finishes in the bottom half of our rankings, so you might want to explore other buying options.

Don’t just take our word for it. Check out comments from some of the reviews that drive our rankings and analysis.
