The Fiat 500X is not a good subcompact SUV. This vehicle has a stylish cabin and straightforward infotainment system, but it trails its rivals in just about every other area, from cargo and passenger space to ride quality and acceleration. Should I Buy the Fiat 500X?

There are plenty of small crossover SUVs that provide better value than this Fiat. The Honda HR-V is more practical than the 500X, offering a larger cargo hold and plenty of room for passengers. Which Is Better: Fiat 500X or Mini Cooper Countryman?

While it’s a pricey choice, the Mini Cooper Countryman is a much better buy than the 500X. The Countryman has a lineup of potent engines, and the turbo-four in its top-of-the-line John Cooper Works model produces a class-leading 301 horsepower. The Countryman also has roomier seats, a larger cargo hold, and nimbler handling than the 500X. If you can spend a little more – the base Countryman costs around $3,800 more to buy than the base 500X – go with the Mini.

Which Is Better: Fiat 500X or Jeep Renegade?

The Jeep Renegade was built on the same platform as the Fiat, and it’s the better vehicle. Both SUVs share an intuitive infotainment system, and the Jeep is available with the same engine that powers the Fiat. The 500X may have more standard features and nicer cabin materials, but the Renegade has more room for cargo, greater off-road capability, and a gentler ride. Further, the Jeep Renegade Latitude comes similarly equipped to the base 500X and costs around $450 less.

How Many People Does the 500X Seat?

The Fiat 500X is a subcompact crossover SUV that can seat up to five people. Cloth seats are standard, and leather-trimmed seats are available. Available upgrades include front sport seats, heated front seats, and an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat.

While some critics praise this vehicle’s seats, others express a desire for more thigh support and seat padding. Plenty of rivals have more spacious rear seats than the 500X.

This Fiat comes standard with the Uconnect infotainment system. It features a 7-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, a six-speaker stereo, and a USB port.

Navigation is available, as are satellite radio, a Beats stereo with eight or nine speakers, and a dual-pane panoramic sunroof.

The Uconnect infotainment system can be found in many Fiat, Chrysler, Jeep, Ram, and Dodge vehicles. It’s well-regarded as being straightforward, but in the 500X, there are a few oddities. For example, the time display vanishes if the radio is turned off.

500X Engine: Just Enough

The sole engine powering this Fiat is a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. It makes 177 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque, and it’s mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission.

While the turbo engine produces sufficient power for cruising around town or the freeway, accelerating can be a slow affair. The transmission garners mixed praise, with some critics saying it’s responsive while others knock it for being slow to downshift.

500X Gas Mileage: Subpar to Typical

This vehicle gets an EPA-estimated 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. While that's slightly below average for the subcompact SUV class overall, it’s worth noting that this Fiat only comes with all-wheel drive, whereas many rivals have a more efficient front-wheel-drive base configuration. Compared to rivals with all-wheel drive, the Fiat’s estimates are typical.

Rear parking sensors, satellite radio, and a sunroof are available.

Fiat 500X Trekking

The Trekking model retails for $25,995. Aside from satellite radio, premium cloth upholstery, and a few exterior styling tweaks such as a silver rear fascia, it doesn’t gain much over the Pop trim in the way of standard equipment.

However, the Trekking does have more options available, including the suite of safety features mentioned above. Also available are navigation, an eight-speaker Beats stereo, leather-trimmed seats, a driver’s-seat back pocket, heated front seats, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, a dual-pane sunroof, and front and rear parking sensors.

Fiat 500X Sport

The 500X Sport trim starts at $26,895. As the name implies, it gets a few sporty tweaks, such as a flat-bottom steering wheel and front sport seats.

The Sport has many of the same options as the Trekking trim, and it can be had with a nine-speaker Beats audio system.

Fiat 500X Trekking Plus

The Trekking Plus starts at $29,495. It gains many of the options listed above, including front and rear parking sensors, navigation, an eight-speaker premium stereo, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

The Final Call

The 2020 Fiat 500X is stylish, but that doesn’t make it a great value. Its seats are firm and cramped, especially in the rear, and its cargo hold is one of the smallest among subcompact SUVs. Its predicted reliability rating is low as well. Additionally, while its turbo engine is serviceable, the 500X is slow to accelerate, and it rides stiffly on most roads.
