A supple suspension delivers fluid handling along with an exceptional ride quality that reflects Jaguar’s sophisticated image. Unfortunately, the XF lagged its rivals in our tournament of performance testing.

Despite a new set of available engines, the Jaguar has the same lithe chassis that turns twisty roads and high-speed corners into exciting opportunities. The lineup now includes a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four; the 25t makes 247 horsepower, and the 30t has 296. While we’ve only tested the former, its 0.87 g of cornering grip and 183-foot emergency braking distance were nearly identical to the sporty XF S model. Too bad the turbo four was much slower than similar competitors. Still, our all-wheel-drive 25t exhibited the same terrific ride and handling that are the focal point of other XF models.

Acceleration

Although the diesel inline-four grouses at startup and has disappointing acceleration numbers, its impressive fuel economy remains a consolation. It slogs away from stoplights under heavy throttle but responds admirably at cruising speeds. The 340-hp supercharged V-6 performs in the same league as its more powerful twin and other performance-focused sedans in this field. The S and its high-output V-6 do no better and they lack the pleasing sound and quickness of the sporty opponents that the XF is pitted against and priced alongside.

Ride, Handling, and Steering

We drove an XF with and without the sport suspension; it’s standard on the S and R-Sport models, but not found on lower trim levels. We barely noticed a difference in handling between the 20d R-Sport AWD and S AWD. Both had all-season tires, and they finished 0.02 g apart during our cornering test. Both also boasted a quiet, compliant ride and steering that adeptly transitioned between low-speed lightness and high-speed heft.

Braking

The brake pedal felt soft and had a gradual response in the 20d R-Sport and S we tested. The muted pedal feedback was only concerning on the S model, which also had the longest braking distance of our tests at 180 feet.
