Without ratings from crash-test agencies, we can’t judge how safe the Boxster would be in a crash. Some active-safety systems are absent, but we’re at least glad of the standard backup camera and parking sensors.

Nothing has changed in the safety category for the 718 Boxster this year. It still offers only a limited number of active-safety features and has still not been crash-tested by NHTSA or the IIHS.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the nonprofit, independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) evaluate vehicles for crashworthiness in the United States. NHTSA assigns cars an overall rating out of five stars. IIHS uses a different set of tests, grades cars on a scale of Good to Poor, and awards the vehicles that perform best across its tests with Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ honors, the latter of which requires that the subject’s automated forward-collision-braking system performs well.

The Boxster has not been tested by either ratings agency since this new generation was launched, so we can’t speculate on how it would fare in a crash.

Airbags, Child Seats, and Spare Tire Location

There’s no spare tire, but a tire inflator kit stored in the front trunk should help keep you on the road. No fixed roof means no side-curtain airbags, but Porsche has built side airbags into the door frames and seats to protect occupants whether the Boxster’s convertible top is up or down.

Active-Safety Features

The Boxster is so diminutive that you hardly need blind-spot monitoring, so we don’t mind that it’s not a standard feature. The complete absence of rear cross-traffic alert and lane-departure warning is more irksome but in keeping with Porsche’s driver-first philosophy.
