Consumers will be happy to know that even the entry-level Sentra now comes standard with automated emergency braking and a backup camera, the latter of which is now required by law. On higher trims, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control are also available, but that’s it. The Sentra doesn’t come with such active-safety equipment as lane-departure warning, automatic high-beams, and lane-keeping assist.

Crash Test Results

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the nonprofit, independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) evaluate vehicles for crashworthiness in the United States. NHTSA assigns cars an overall rating out of five stars. IIHS uses a different set of tests, grades cars on a scale of Good to Poor, and awards the vehicles that perform best across its tests with Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ honors, the latter of which requires that the subject’s automated forward-collision-braking system performs well.

Airbags, Child Seats, and Spare Tire Location

While there’s plenty of space to accommodate a child seat, the angle of the Sentra’s rear-seat lower cushion requires you to level the child seat with a small shim. Nissan thoughtfully offers what it calls the Snug Kids guide, a list of child seats that fit properly in each of the company’s vehicles.

Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert come as part of an optional $1020 Technology package on the SL or SR, as well as in higher-priced Premium packages on the SR and SR Turbo; the packages also include navigation, extra apps, and SiriusXM satellite radio.
