The Obamas mourn Bo, 12: Dogs and cats in the White House

Wonderwall Logo By Marisa Laudadio of Wonderwall | Slide 1 of 46: On May 8, 2021, former President Barack Obama shared the sad news that Bo, the Portuguese water dog who joined his family in the White House in 2009, had passed away at 12. "Today our family lost a true friend and loyal companion. For more than a decade, Bo was a constant, gentle presence in our lives — happy to see us on our good days, our bad days, and everyday in between," he tweeted. "He tolerated all the fuss that came with being in the White House, had a big bark but no bite, loved to jump in the pool in the summer, was unflappable with children, lived for scraps around the dinner table, and had great hair. He was exactly what we needed and more than we ever expected. We will miss him dearly." As we mourn Bo -- who's see here as a puppy running on the South Lawn with the president and daughters Malia and Sasha in April 2009 -- join Wonderwall.com to take a look back at more of the canines (and a few cats!) who've called the White House home over the last century. Keep reading for more adorable political animals...
