Despite the relationship, Galecki was set on keeping things quiet, given that Penny and Leonard were not an item on-screen at that point. In Galecki's mind, their real-life relationship might've hurt the show.

Cuoco stated, “When we were dating, Johnny was very worried about ruining the fans’ outlook on Leonard and Penny, because they weren’t even dating yet at that point in the series,” Cuoco said. “He was so cerebral, and I’m like, ‘What?! Who f*****’ cares?! They’re gonna be fine!’”

“He was very protective of what the fans would think, because we wanted them to want Leonard and Penny together so badly, that if they saw us together in real life, it could ruin the fantasy,” she explained.

Galecki would also state that fans might see things differently had they known about the breakup. Nonetheless, even with the split, the two still had to show up as if nothing happened. However, when word spread about the split, Chuck Lorre might've decided to have a little fun of his own.

Given the circumstances, it wasn't just any split... Cuoco and Galecki still had to face each other at work, as a couple. It seems like Chuck Lorre decided to have some fun with it. According to Kaley Cuoco, Penny's scenes alongside Leonard suddenly became a lot more intimate and romantic... Looking back, Cuoco believes this was purposely done, perhaps to take off some tension... or, Lorre just wanted to prank the two.

Kaley stated, "When we broke up, obviously it was a little sensitive for a minute."

"But I remember those weeks that Chuck had written these episodes where all of a sudden our characters were like sleeping together every other second. And Johnny and I would talk, I’m like, ‘No but I think he did that on purpose.’ I still believe he might’ve ... just to f--- with us. ... Which makes me love him even more."
