Tom Cruise Lands First Oscar Nomination in 23 Years

The nominations for the 95th Academy Awards were announced Tuesday morning, and Tom Cruise has been nominated as a producer in the Best Picture category for Top Gun: Maverick.

Cruise has previously been nominated for his acting work in no less than three movies: Born on the Fourth of July (1989), Jerry Maguire (1996) and Magnolia (1999).
Top Gun: Maverick was one of the biggest hits of 2022 and has grossed almost 1.5 billion at the box office, Cruise’s biggest success ever. The film was also a fan favorite, scoring 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and a staggering 99% audience score.
The sequel to the original 1986 Top Gun film follows Cruise as he returns as U.S. Navy captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who trains a new team of Top Gun graduates for dangerous missions.
The film also earned Oscar nominations for Best Visual Effects, Best Original Song (“Hold My Hand” by Lady Gaga), and Best Adapted Screenplay.
In August 2022, Top Gun: Maverick producer Jerry Bruckheimer spoke to EW about why the movie had been such a success with both old and new fans.

He said: “It’s always the characters, the themes, the story. That’s what it’s all about; it’s about the emotion, it’s about bringing Iceman back, it’s about seeing a real movie.”
Bruckheimer also revealed that Cruise was one of the hardest-working people in the business and that he hoped the Academy would take notice.
It looks like they did, and although Cruise has to forego the Best Actor nomination, we’re sure he’ll be looking forward to walking the red carpet in March.
