Canton Repository earns writing, photography awards

The Canton Repository won more than 15 writing and photography awards in the 2020 Ohio Associated Press Media Editors' newspaper contest.

The organization announced the finalists Tuesday. The awards in order of finish — first, second and third places — will be announced at a later date, along with the General Excellence, Hall of Fame, Rising Star and First Amendment winners. 

Photographer Scott Heckel received six individual awards and is up for the honor of "Best Photographer." He also is being recognized in the "Best News Photo," "Best Feature Photo," "Best Sports Photo" and "Best Photo Story" categories. Two of his photo essays are among the three finalists in the "Best Photo Story" category.

The newspaper's other awards are:

Best Business Writer: Shane Hoover and Edd Pritchard

Best Columnist: Charita Goshay

Best Feature Writer: Tim Botos

Best Graphics Artist: B.J. Lisko

Best Sports Feature Writer: Josh Weir

Best Sports Enterprise: Steve Doerschuk

Best Explanatory Reporting: Kelli Weir for "Stark County First to Test Ohio School Transfer Issue."

Best Full Page Design: B.J. Lisko for "Pro Wrestling Takeover." 

Best Digital Project: Tim Botos for "Do You Remember?" and Shane Hoover for "Tales from the Rep Morgue."

The newspaper also is being honored in the "Best special sports section" category.

Overall, 52 newspapers submitted 1,418 entries in the competition, which features news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from last year.

The Repository competed in Division IV, which included other newspapers such as The (Elyria) Chronicle-Telegram, Warren Tribune Chronicle and The Lima News. The Division IV entries were judged by editors at the The Grand Haven (Michigan) Tribune.
