One of the largest roofing companies in the country is making plans to move to Hendersonvnille, and with it could come as many as 70 jobs over the next three to five years.

Vice President and General Manager Randy Johnson said Baker Roofing has been in Nashville since 2010 and has been instrumental in roofing much of the city’s new construction, including the Music City Center. The city’s growth is what brought the company — based out of North Carolina — to Tennessee.

The 103-year-old family-owned commercial and residential roofing company opened an office in Memphis in 2013, and in January, it opened a service office in Chattanooga, Johnson said.

“So we’ve got all points of Tennessee covered,” he said. Those openings are the company's 23rd and 24th locations in the Southeast.

And the company continues to grow. Based upon revenues, Johnson said they are among the largest roofing contractors in the country.

Baker Roofing's Nashville office is currently located in Madison, where they lease an approximately 12,000 square-foot building. That lease will expire in July.

“We’ve outgrown it,” said Johnson of the Madison location.

Johnson said they were looking at properties north of Nashville, including Hendersonville and Gallatin. And a lot of his employees – himself included – live in Hendersonville, he added. So when they came across a large property in Hendersonville where they could build a 20,000-square foot office, it seemed like a good fit.

The Hendersonville Planning Commission has recommended that the Board of Mayor and Aldermen approve an ordinance to rezone the property, located on the east side of Tennessee way, south of Volunteer Drive, from industrial to heavy commercial. Mayor Jamie Clary said it would come before the board for first reading Jan. 8.

“We appreciate Baker Roofing recognizing what Hendersonville offers,” said Clary in an email to the Tennessean. “The company has several employees living in Hendersonville, making this another example of business leaders putting their business where their employees want to be. We look forward to them investing in Hendersonville and adding many more years of successful business operations.”

Johnson said if everything goes as planned, they hope to open for business at the new location in January of 2020.

Currently, the Madison office employees 80 to 90 employees, and over the next three to five years, Johnson said he could see that number rising to 150.

“Hendersonville has grown exponentially since I moved there four years ago,” he said. “And we hope to add to that.”
