Tim Ma’s bar food specials run until 1 a.m. on weekends

American Son this week extended its hours on Thursdays through Sundays, offering a late-night menu targeted directly at drinkers downtown who might need a little extra grease lining their stomachs.

From 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. on the aforementioned nights, customers will have access to a four-item menu touted in a news release as a “grittier, more experimental take on the greasy neighborhood bar food that we all know and love.” That includes Taiwanese fried chicken bites, tater tot poutine, steak and cheese sandwiches, and impossible burger Big Macks. Each dish costs $14.

Dinner service at American Son, which has already endeared itself to the Washington Post with a potato croquette that arrives in the form of a funnel cake, ends at 10 p.m. or 10:30 p.m. depending on the night. Chef Tim Ma opened the restaurant inside the Eaton hotel (1201 K Street NW) in mid-October, rolling out a menu full of culinary riffs on his experience as the American son of Taiwanese immigrants.

The late-night menu seems especially attractive for people who feel iffy about dropping $28 on tofu gnocchi or $55 on a large format spaghetti squash ssam. Here’s a look at each of the dishes on the late-night menu.
