After several construction and permitting delays over the last few months, Big Boss Chinese from chef Guy Wong (Ruby Chow’s, Miso Ko, Ton Ton) opens tonight in Midtown.

Housed in the former Chinese Buddha space on 10th Street, once owned by his mother, Wong has described Big Boss Chinese as the “more casual little brother” to his Old Fourth Ward restaurant Ruby Chow’s. The menu here centers on “Chinese American classics” paired with beer, wine, sake, and bubble tea.

Due to industry-wide staffing shortages, Big Boss Chinese is currently only open for takeout, with dine-in service expected in the future.

Just weeks prior to the start of the pandemic in 2020, Wong opened his Asian small plates restaurant Ruby Chow’s in the Old Fourth Ward. That restaurant saw the return of the shoyu tamago egg over crispy rice and Peking duck bun made popular at Wong’s pioneering Old Fourth Ward restaurant Miso Izakaya, which closed in 2018. Wong continues to add new dishes to the menu there and since opened a covered patio in the portico of the building.

Eater reached out to Wong for comment and more details on the opening of Big Boss Chinese.
