Costco Just Issued This Serious Food Recall

On Friday, Costco issued a recall notice for a reported 862,000 pounds of a specialty grocery item that the manufacturer says Costco members and shoppers at other supermarkets nationwide may have purchased anytime in the past six months. One official recall advisory site suggests the product is responsible for 36 illnesses in 17 states. We've got the Costco recall details you need to know.

An August 27 memo to Costco members was dispatched to advise customers that a New Jersey-based Italian food brand, Fratelli Beretta, was voluntarily recalling packages of their Fratelli Beretta Uncured Antipasto in collaboration with the U.S Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS).

The USDA-FSIS reports that this recall includes double 12-ounce packages (24-ounce trays) of Fratelli Beretta uncured prosciutto, soppressata, Milano salami, and coppa. They state the products were produced between February 28, 2021 and August 15, 2021 and show best-by dates of August 27, 2021 through February 11, 2022.

USDA-FSIS says they have been working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and individual state health agencies, after a traceback investigation led authorities to believe that the three dozen Salmonella cases were caused by the Fratelli Beretta Uncured Antipasto meats.

Fratelli Beretta's memo to Costco members stated: "If you have any of this product remaining, do not consume the product. Please return it to your local Costco for a refund." They add that customers may call Fratelli Beretta USA at 1-866-918-8738.

It's important to note that the USDA-FSIS states: "These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide." However, with USA Today reporting such a large recalled quantity, it appears the Fratelli Beretta uncured meats may have been sold at other supermarket chains—not just Costco.

  • When we think about trying to fight inflammation, it's important to look at the whole picture. While there are foods and drinks we can consume that are anti-inflammatory,  "there really is no one specific food, beverage or ingredient that causes inflammation," says Amy Goodson, MS, RD, CSSD, LD.The issue is more about our habits and the things we consume on a regular basis. "In most cases, it is consistent intake of certain foods and/or ingredients that can contribute to health problems ultimately leading to low-grade chronic inflammation," says Goodson. So when it comes to drinks that might increase inflammation, we have to look at how often the beverages are consumed and the potential health issues they might trigger. "Individuals who regularly consume large amounts of soda, sweet tea, other sugar-sweetened beverages are likely at a greater risk to experience chronic inflammation as a result of other health problems," says Goodson. With this in mind, here are some drinks that can increase inflammation and lead to other health problems if consumed in excess or over long periods of time. Read on, and for more on how to eat healthy, make sure you avoid these 100 Unhealthiest Foods on the Planet.Read the original article on Eat This, Not That!

  • You've probably heard that Starbucks has just released this year's pumpkin spice latte. For PSL lovers who can have dairy, this came as exciting news. However, an Eat This, Not That! nutrition analysis has highlighted one significant issue with pumpkin-flavored drinks for consumers with one particular dietary restriction. Here's what nutrition experts suggest you may want to know. After Starbucks dropped their full fall menu on Wednesday, we heard from one reader who was seeking recommendations for dairy-free pumpkin drinks after they'd visited one of the major chains. (In this case, it wasn't Starbucks.) "[I] couldn't wait to have a PSL," she said. "I drank half, then googled it. The pumpkin spice flavoring is made with condensed milk."It's true. Lots of consumers don't realize that many of the major coffee chains, including Starbucks, include some form of milk as an ingredient in their pumpkin syrup. For consumers like the one in this instance—a nursing mom with an infant who has an extreme dairy sensitivity—this can be confusing. "I thought getting oat milk and no whipped cream would be enough," she told us. Unfortunately, some fall drink lovers are learning the hard way. For nursing mothers in particular, this may be especially concerning because recently, it was reported that dairy is now the biggest food allergy threat to children.Says Katie Bressack, a board-certified holistic nutritionist in Los Angeles (and a mom of twin infants herself): "I personally would not have thought that there was dairy in [a coffee drink made with plant milk]." Adding: "It's a good reminder that you have to triple-check everything, just like you would read labels in the grocery store."To help you navigate pumpkin spice season, here's a quick list of options to consider if you cannot, or do not, drink dairy. (Read this original article on Eat This, Not That!)
