CP Feeds, LLC, along with Country Visions Cooperative have teamed up with some of their supply partners to donate $50,000 worth of dairy products to Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin.

According to a news release, pallet shipments of butter and cottage cheese will be donated to provide ongoing support of food to the eastern Wisconsin area as well as support dairy producers and the dairy industry’s supply chain.

Elanco, Church & Dwight, Adisseo and Balchem are some of the partners, along with Nutra Blend, RP Nutrients, Zinpro, Land O’ Lakes, CHS and CoBank, that have joined with these companies by matching donations and providing additional funding for this effort.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on all our lives," CP Feeds General Manager Jim Loefer said in the release. "Businesses that were ‘non-essential,’ their employees and those who were part of their supply chain, including our dairy producers, were among the hardest hit. We hope this donation helps provide for those in need with wholesome dairy products. CP Feeds would like to thank Elanco for their leadership in coordinating this effort for all of us.”

Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin started picking up pallets of butter on a biweekly schedule from Pine River Dairy in Manitowoc in mid-May. A supply of cottage cheese from Westby Coop Creamery in Westby is on a similar schedule.

In total, Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin will be receiving about 10,500 pounds of butter and more than 20,000 16-ounce containers of cottage cheese.

The donation also includes 1,250 soft-sided coolers for the food pantries to use for distributing the products.

Steve Zutz, CEO of Country Visions Cooperative, said in the release: “At Country Visions Cooperative, as a farmer-owned cooperative, we are honored to be supporting our dairy farmers and those facing hunger during these tough times in eastern Wisconsin. The COVID-19 pandemic is resulting in hardships for many and putting even more of a strain on our farmers. I’m glad we could come together with our partners to make this donation to support our dairy producers and provide products that will help those struggling to put food on their tables in eastern Wisconsin.”

Manitowoc County Historical Society receives grant for Meeme Poll House exhibit

The Manitowoc County Historical Society has received a grant from the Wisconsin Humanities Council for an exhibit focused on the history of the historic Meeme Poll House.

The Manitowoc County Historical Society has a long tradition of creating immersive exhibits within the 60-acre outdoor museum’s historic structures. In 2018, the Meeme Poll House, the voting space for residents in the township of Meeme, was relocated to become a part of the museum's Pinecrest Historical Village. Since that time, volunteers have worked to restore the structure and museum staff has created an interpretive plan to bring the structure to life.

The Poll House was constructed in 1900 by German immigrants Joseph Schwartz and Edmund Kolb. As new pioneers to the community, Schwartz and Kolb took on the important task of creating a space where they could let their voices be heard in the new world.

For more than 80 years, the Meeme Poll House was a fixture for the residents in the southern Manitowoc County Township of Meeme. Inside the historic structure are the original voting booths, ballot boxes and the handwritten names of voters on the walls. These pieces of history will be enhanced with exhibit creation inside the Meeme Poll House.

With the grant from the Wisconsin Humanities Council, the Manitowoc County Historical Society will create an exhibit inside the historic Meeme Poll House that will help share the story of civic duty and the struggle to vote for new immigrants and women. Hands-on and immersive youth programs will take place inside the Poll House. The exhibit is expected to open in September, and a full year of interactive programming will follow.
