ANN ARBOR, MI – Want a pancake topped with pecans and Nutella? How about brown sugar and cream cheese? Maybe some peanuts and caramel?

If that sounds delicious, then get happy because these options and much more are served at The Broken Egg, 221 N. Main St. in Ann Arbor, which has been serving up fresh and gourmet breakfast food since 1994.

“My intention was to make everything from scratch,” Owner Eugenia Pantely said. “We have nothing ready ahead of time. As we get the order, that’s when we make it.”

The Broken Egg has two notable sections on its menu -- pancakes and omelets. All the pancakes are made from scratch and rise up like cakes, Pantely said. Options include Gazoonie pancakes with Nutella and candied pecans; Snickers pancakes with peanuts, chocolate fudge and caramel; raspberry (melba) ricotta pancakes and banana crunch granola pancakes.

One of the restaurant’s most popular items is the cinnamon swirl pancakes, with cream cheese and brown sugar.

“I get a kick out of the customers liking something different and that go ‘ooo-ahhh’ as (their food) goes to the table,” Pantely said. “That means everything to me.”

For those looking for a savory breakfast, The Broken Egg has plenty of omelets. The restaurant uses cage-free eggs and gourmet ingredients, including fresh avocado, pine nuts, sun-dried tomatoes, jalapeño peppers and chicken breast, Pantely said.

One of the restaurant’s more popular omelets is the Devil’s Hash Bash, which features chorizo sausage, onion, bacon, mushrooms, chipotle peppers, green peppers, hash browns and white cheddar and asiago cheeses, plus three additional eggs.

For Lunch, The Broken Egg has burgers and salads, including the Chicken Julie Salad with chicken breast, avocado, bacon, red onion, carrots and more.

If someone is looking for healthier option, the restaurant offers a plate of feta cheese, sliced avocado, and cauliflower toast. Vegetarian burgers and omelets also are available.

But like many restaurants now, Pantely’s business has been severely scaled back due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Due to the small size of the dining room, occupancy has been scaled back to about 30% instead of 50%. The Broken Egg was closed until June 15, even for carryout and delivery.

Carryout is now available and Pantely said it’s been doing OK. But she said the number of customers coming in fluctuates every day, adding she’snot sure what the future looks like for The Broken Egg.

“I pray that it goes back the way it was,” Pantely said. “I am going try to stick it out as long as I can. I have a very big rent to pay. That’s the hard part: paying that big rent when you’re not busy.”

The restaurant is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. everyday except Sunday when it opens at 8 a.m.
