Midwest Barbecue Association holds Championship Cookoff

KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - If you love barbecue, Kearney was the place to be. Midwest Barbecue Association hosted their championship cookoff from 5-8 p.m. at the Eagles Club . Grill teams were stationed on 24th Street between First and Central Avenue.

The event featured four types of meat: smoked ribs, chicken, brisket, and pork. According officials at the event, the contest featured some of the best barbecue in the region.

“We got 11 of the best barbecuers in our group here today and they’re coming from Lincoln, Vermillion, South Dakota, Creighton, Nebraska, Hastings, Grand Island, all over the place and we’re going to have a good time,” said Kevin Brewer, President of Midwest Barbecue Association.

The meal of the event was completed with chips and beans and the cost is $15 per plate. Every region has different ways to woo the crowd with flavors and signature dishes. Event officials explained why the Midwest has the best version of this American favorite.

“I guess what takes it over in the Midwest is the ribs are a lot sweeter. Our brisket, I’ll put our brisket up against anybody. With our burnt ends and that kind of stuff. Our chicken, you’ll have 11 of the different kinds of flavor with chicken and then our pork butts; everybody, anybody. They all inject they all use different kinds of rubs,” said Brewer.

Just like great chefs, all grill masters have a secret ingredient they use. Eagles Club officials are hoping the event brings more attention to the city.

“Well I think this a tremendous event for the city of Kearney. I mean we’re a city of 30,000 people. We need to have a good barbecue event. Hopefully we’re kind of starting it up again after COVID. Eventually hope to grow and maybe we start doing bands to make a bigger event out of this,” said Rob Humphreys, vice president of the Eagles Club.

The Eagles Club had five weeks to prepare for the event, but hope they will host it again next year and aim to make the event bigger and better.
