A Murray Hill restaurant has changed its name but not its Nashville-style hot chicken menu popular with many Jacksonville-area residents.

On Sept. 1, Huey's Nashville Hot Chicken became Bold Birds Nashville Hot Chicken. Restaurant owner Hughes Brown announced the rebranding on social media and in a news release on the Jax Chamber website.

In announcing the name change, Brown noted that the eatery's menu still brings the heat and lives up to the motto "Chicken Still Hotter Than a Mother Clucker."

"We want to trademark our brand and there are too many 'hueys' around. We are changing our name to incorporate our love for Jax…while keeping all our flavors, and love for hospitality the same," he replied on Facebook to questions about the rebranding.

The rebranding comes as potential competitor Huey Magoo's Chicken Tenders prepares to open soon at 3952 3rd. St. S. at South Beach Regional Plaza in Jacksonville Beach.

Huey Magoo's company officials previously have said the central Florida-based chain will open at least three Northeast Florida restaurants.

Bold Birds Nashville Hot Chicken is a fast-casual eatery opened by Brown and his family under its old name Huey's Nashville Hot Chicken at 1173 Edgewood Ave. S. in May 2020, shortly after they relocated to Jacksonville from Nashville, where they had a successful restaurant. He's a Nashville native but Jacksonville is her hometown, he previously told the Times-Union.

The restaurant's new name reflects their commitment to Jacksonville, by combining its “Bold New City of the South” nickname with the restaurant’s signature dish, Brown said in the news release.

“Murray Hill has welcomed us completely, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to continue to grow in this great neighborhood. We’ve been embraced and want to expand on the success of our little chicken joint," he said.

The restaurant offers Nashville-style chicken sandwiches, quarter- and half-chicken dinners with spice levels ranging from classic, which is no heat, to mild, medium, hot, "mother clucker and hotter than a mother clucker."

Also on the menu are chicken and waffles, chicken tenders, wings, salads and a variety of specials such as a hot shrimp po'boy. Desserts include key lime pie and banana pudding.

In addition, Bold Birds offers at least a half dozen beers on tap, including local brands from Tabula Rasa and Bold City Brewery, the menu shows.
