National Doughnut Day: Where to find 9 of Seattle's best doughnut shops

Unlike some other food scenes in the Emerald City that might be lacking — we hear you, East Coast transplants bemoaning Seattle's pizza — the city is actually home to flourishing doughnut shops that are taking the humble pastry above and beyond the traditional glazed or powdered hole.

And since June 4 is National Doughnut Day, there's never been a better time to treat yourself to one of the upstarts shaking up the local pastry scene.

Unlike other food holidays, National Doughnut Day has a history that goes beyond a special hashtag. The day was designated to honor the so-called "doughnut lassies" of the Salvation Army, who delivered the sweet treats to soldiers fighting in France during World War I.

The fried treats were so successful in comforting homesick soldiers that doughnut lassies returned to the front lines during World War II and the Vietnam War.

While the holiday is now celebrated with social media pictures of delightful doughy dozens, plenty of Seattle shops are getting in on the fun with specials. Whether you like them filled with cream or sprinkled with unique toppings, here's where to find Seattle's best doughnut spots.

Dough Joy

A newcomer to Seattle's doughnut scene, this plant-based doughnut truck opened in the Ballard neighborhood last month and sold out from pre-orders on its very first day. The queer-owned food truck serves up exciting vegan flavors like a maple-glazed "Faconator" doughnut topped with smoky coconut bacon and a tajin-sprinkled mango glazed doughnut.

"Our goal with Dough Joy is to bring something new, exciting, and delicious to the Seattle community," wrote Co-owner Sean Willis. "Whether you're plant based or not, we think you will love our tasty creations that are better for people, animals, and the planet."

Dochi

With locations in the International District and Tukwila, this store is pioneering a new cross-cultural chewy delight that is half Japanese rice dessert mochi and half American fried doughnut.

For the namesake holiday, Dochi is giving out free ube glazed dochis with each purchase. The shop is also hosting a giveaway through Instagram with local gift store Sairen and online ceramics shop Ceremony for National Doughnut Day.

The Flour Box

This Hillman City hub for doughnuts has been earning a lot of acclaim in the local food scene for its brioche doughnuts, and the hype — and long lines — are well deserved. Born out of a simple college hobby, baker Pamela Vuong opened her brick-and-mortar space last year following a successful kickstarter campaign.

You can skip the line and preorder your treats online for pickup on Thursday or Friday, or try your luck at their walk-up window on Saturday and Sunday. This week's flavors include a savory everything bagel-inspired doughnut with a chive cream cheese filling, a salted caramel doughnut with whipped mascarpone filling, a horchata custard filled doughnut, and refreshing strawberry mint doughnut filled with sweet cream.

General Porpoise

With three locations around the city, Renee's Erickson's doughnut and coffee shop has become a favorite for those looking for cream, curd or fruit filled doughnuts. It was even named one of the best doughnut shops in the country by Thrillist, which is no surprise considering Erickson is an award-winning chef in the Northwest.

For the special holiday, they'll be serving up chocolate marshmallow, lemon curd, vanilla custard, toasted coconut and apricot jam doughnuts.

Raised Doughnuts

With a line usually spilling outside, this bustling Central District shop is well worth the wait. Their June flavors include blueberry mochi, nectarine, tahini chocolate and earl grey. If you swing by on Fridays you can get a honey crueler, and the weekends feature a Dalgona coffee doughnut, a whipped coffee which surged in popularity through TikTok during quarantine.

If you make it through the line, be sure to pick up a bacon-topped "Pup Nut" to make your four-legged friend's day a little sweeter as well.

Serious Takeout

Seattle chef Tom Douglas's Oh Mochi Donuts will have a pop up at Serious Takeout all weekend, serving up mochi donut sundaes, root beer floats and blueberry crumble. If the weather proves to be as hot and sunny as the previous weekend, those extravagant doughnut sundaes will be an excellent way to cool down.

Temple Pastries

This sourdough-focused bakery opened up shop in the Central District last year after earning a loyal following at farmers markets. Baker Christina Wood experiments with different types of flour, from rye to buckwheat, to make her creations stand out from others.

"Making pastries is an art and a ritual," Wood wrote. "When you eat Temple Pastries you aren’t just eating another croissant or sourdough, but my highest form of expression."

Their plant-filled brick-and-mortar outpost serves up impressive innovations like cronuts (croissant doughnuts) in unique flavors like hibiscus and chamomile for a refreshing summer treat. Be sure to also grab a cruffin (croissant muffin) to expand your horizons of baked goods.

Zuri's Donutz

These aren't your grandma's doughnuts. This Black-owned shop in Lynnwood has been stirring up a buzz with the most zany, eclectic flavors including savory chicken-and-waffles doughnuts, ube-glazed oreo treats, and even doughnuts that come injected with bourbon. If you can't make the trek up to the storefront, be sure to look out for pop-up markets at Ballard Blossoms.

9th & Hennepin Donuts

West Seattle also has a thriving doughnut scene as well, and this takeout window and farmers market favorite is leading the way with hot, made-to order bites. With a rotating menu of weekly flavors, this shop makes living on that side of the bridge well worth it. Flavors available this week include coconut cream pie-inspired hole and an apple quince fritter with a honey glaze.
