His name is Mark Gdd. He’s a stay-at-home dad from Albany, New York.

He’s 35 and he got into competitive eating to ... wait for it ... lose weight!

“I was 265 pounds at 5 1/4 u2032 11 1/4 u2033 and I am now 172 and have remained that weight for almost three years now,” Gdd said in a recent email. “I continue to do food challenges because I really enjoy it, and it’s a fun way for my family to travel and go places we would not normally go.”

One of those recent trips was to Michigan where he conquered four eating challenges, including a new record at Downtown Trini’s and Margarita Joe’s in Sparta. He was able to take down 41 tacos in one hour, 26 minutes and 59 seconds. The previous record was 40 tacos in a two-hour sitting.

The Michigan trip was part of his goal to do four food challenge wins per state, and “Michigan was just next on my list,” he said.

“I found the food challenges online, and then I confirmed the challenges with the restaurants one to two months prior to going. I then set up travel and hotels and that is that. Next I will most likely be going to West Virginia and that tour will be in mid-November.”
