Sidecar rides

One of Southern California’s most popular sweets shops, Sidecar Doughnuts, is expanding in a few different ways. The company is on the eve of it’s five year anniversary at its Orange County location (along with a three-year-old Santa Monica outlet), and will be adding a third new location and a food truck along with a celebrity chef collaboration series in the coming months.

First up is the big new jump to a brick and mortar space down in Del Mar outside of San Diego. That spot at 12925 El Camino Real inside the Del Mar Highlands Town Center should come online by the end of the year, while the official Sidecar food truck gets rolling this month. Expect a lot of parking at private and public events, as well as a few one-off pop-up stops around town. And finally, ownership is starting up a collaborative series on April 28 with chefs like Brooke Williamson and Richard Blais.

Somni for somebody

The next round of limited tickets for Somni, the upscale dinner destination at The Bazaar, go on sale at 10 a.m. The $235 event has extremely low availability and high demand, so best to get on it quick.

Serious cheffing

Chef Marcus Jernmark of Sweden’s two-Michelin-starred Frantzén is in town, eating at the usual hotspots. He even apparently found time to go behind the counter at Scratch Bar to make some food with Phillip Frankland Lee and the gang.

Love for Broken Spanish

L.A. Taco is more deeply exploring the restaurants that made their inaugural Rogue 99 restaurant list, including the critically-lauded Broken Spanish. Chef Ray Garcia is a luminary, they say, that is “turning out some of the best food in the city.”

All things tiki

LA Magazine has some more backstory and offers a deeper history on the Don the Beachcomber saga, highlighting the Orange County tiki bar’s place in the larger cocktail context, and musing aloud about what may be next for the property.

The city’s gems

Sunset Magazine is all over the restaurant scene in Los Angeles, offering a list of 20 “authentic” places to check out. On the list is Coni’Seafood, Angelini Osteria, The Factory Kitchen for Italian food, and Mid-City taco star El Chato.

Fairfax jobs

The Badmaash team is hiring up for their new location over on Fairfax, with a job fair starting up today and running through tomorrow.
