The Art of Brewing a Perfect Cup of Coffee with a Chemex

So, you’ve decided to use a Chemex to brew your morning cup of joe. Besides being one of the coolest and most elegant-looking pour-overs we’ve ever used, this thing can also brew a mean pot of coffee. Here are our four top tips for getting the most perfectly delicious caffeine fix possible using a Chemex. Tip 1: Preheat Your Filter and Chemex with Hot WaterRun a bit of hot water through the empty filter before you add the grounds to get rid of any lingering paper flavor and prep your carafe for a hot brew. Tip 2: There's a Perfect Ratio of Grounds-to-WaterYou should be using 1 tablespoon of coffee grounds for every 5 ounces water. Follow these and you'll get a rich cup of coffee that isn't too bitter. Tip 3: Bloom the Grounds Before You BrewPour in just enough water to wet the grounds without much dripping through the filter and let it sit for about 45 seconds. This is called blooming the coffee, and it gets kinda scientific—basically, it lets the CO2 gas that's trapped in the grounds escape, so the water can access the flavor compounds of the coffee. No watery cup of joe here. Tip 4: Pour the Water in a Circular MotionIf you pour all your water onto just one section of the grounds then, (unsurprisingly) they will be the only grounds that contribute to the strength of your coffee and you’ll end up wasting a lot of beans. Instead, slowly pour your water around and around the filter, concentrating on darker spots, to get more caffeinated goodness out of every last drop. Mmm. Best. Coffee. Ever.
