UNLV students now have two new fried chicken options near campus on Maryland Parkway. Newcomer Angry Chickz brings its roster of Nashville hot chicken while The Chicken Shack opens its ninth local outpost with a 10th on the way to North Las Vegas.

Angry Chickz out of California opened in the former Smashburger space on Maryland Parkway. The fast-casual restaurant specializes in Nashville hot chicken, with heat levels ranging from country with no heat to angry made with Carolina Reaper peppers, the hottest peppers known to man. Diners who choose this option have to sign a waiver. The restaurant calls its medium sauce “perfect heat.” Customers can order one of four combos with two sliders, hot chicken tenders on white bread, a slider and a tender, or two tenders on buttery rice. Side options include angry fries, angry Mac and cheese, coleslaw, or additional sliders or tenders.

The Angry Chickz, 4725 S. Maryland Pkwy., Open daily from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Takeout and delivery available with online ordering.

The 1,590-square-foot Chicken Shack replaces Vietnamese banh bi and pho specialists Mr. Sandwich at the University Gardens retail center on Maryland Parkway, located across from the main campus and UNLV student union. The restaurant is already in position to install new exterior illuminated signage. Mr. Sandwich, which was a seven-year tenant, shuttered without fanfare last fall.

The Chicken Shack launched in 2005 with cheeky wall murals decorated with “why did the the chicken cross the road?” jokes and images of Fred, the sunglasses wearing company mascot.

The menu features wings, fingers, and sandwiches, plus mac and cheese, barbecue baked beans and macaroni salad sides, Buffalo chicken cheese fries, house-made chili, fried pickles, and a large collection of sauces, including Nashville hot, beer cheese, Asian sesame, creamy garlic Parmesan, honey barbecue, and the appropriately named “damn hot.”

The Chicken Shack, 4626 S. Maryland Pkwy., 702-476-4676. Open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. too 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Takeout ordering available online.
