Want the intel on Austin's buzziest local spots?

We took a data-driven look at the question, using Yelp and SafeGraph, a dataset of commercial points of interest and their visitor patterns, to analyze which restaurants have been on the tips of diners' tongues this month.

To find out who made the list, we first looked at Austin businesses on Yelp by category and counted how many reviews each received. Rather than compare them based on number of reviews alone, we calculated a percentage increase in reviews over the past month, and tracked businesses that consistently increased their volume of reviews to identify statistically significant outliers compared to past performance. Then we analyzed foot traffic data from SafeGraph to validate the trends.

Read on to see which spots have the momentum heading into the end of the year.

Snooze, an A.m. Eatery

Open since September this cocktail bar and New American and breakfast and brunch spot is trending compared to other businesses categorized as "American (New)" on Yelp.

Citywide, New American spots saw a median 1.2% increase in new reviews over the past month, but Snooze, an A.M. Eatery saw a noteworthy 155.6% increase, with a downward trend from a five-star rating a month ago to four stars today.

It's not the only trending outlier in the New American category: Salt Traders Coastal Cooking Zilker has seen a 140.9% increase in reviews, and Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille and Caroline have seen 12.3 and 6.1% increases, respectively.

Located at 1109 E. Fifth St., Suite 180, in East Cesar Chavez, Snooze, an A.M. Eatery offers morning cocktails, shrimp and grits, a lox and latke Benny and a pancake flight (options include blueberry streusel, pineapple upside down or sweet potato).

Snooze, an A.M. Eatery is open from 6:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. daily.

Govalle's Fleet Coffee is also making waves. Open since spring 2016 at 2427 Webberville Road, the popular breakfast and brunch spot, which offers coffee and tea and more, has seen a 1.5% increase in new reviews over the last month — matching that of all businesses tagged "Breakfast & Brunch" on Yelp — but it's seen a 44% increase in visits over the same time frame, according to SafeGraph's foot traffic data.

Fleet Coffee puts a new spin on coffee with specialty drinks like Morning Ritual, which comes with a glass of doughnut-infused milk, a chaser of espresso and a doughnut hole, notes Austin 360. It also has food options like local Veracruz tacos and Sour Duck Market's chocolate croissants, goat chorizo kolaches and pork shoulder danishes. Over the past month, it's maintained a strong 4.5-star rating among Yelpers.

Fleet Coffee is open from 7 a.m.–7 p.m. daily. According to SafeGraph, foot traffic is heaviest at 12 p.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., and on Saturdays and Mondays. If you’re planning your visit, you may want to try its slower periods on Tuesdays.
