Troutdale Standby Shirley’s Tippy Canoe Burns in a Serious Fire This Morning

It’s Friday, which means it’s time for the weekly EaterWire round up of all those news items we didn’t quite cover. This week’s food news cycle was dominated by the Trump administration’s proposed European wine tariffs and various Guy Fieri spottings, but a few stories did fall through the cracks:

DESTROYED CANOE — Shirley’s Tippy Canoe, a classic road trip stop in Troutdale, caught fire Friday morning. Based on the photos and video of the fire, damage to the restaurant looks catastrophic — the Corbett Fire Department told KGW that the building is a “total loss.” The restaurant is known for its appearance on the Food Network show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, hosted by Fieri. GROSS GROCER — Because the state of Oregon wasn’t publishing them online, the Oregonian recently created a grocery store health inspection database for readers. Some of the worst offenders? Supermercados Mexico on SE Division and the SE Belmont H Mart. Representatives from both grocery stores say they’ve made the necessary changes in response to the deductions, which included everything from packaged pork sitting at room temperature to build-up of residue on meat grinders. BIGGER HOODMt. Hood Brewing will expand its brewing operation, which should allow the brewery to can and bottle much more beer in Government Camp. The expansion should double its capacity, and construction has already begun. [WWeek]
