Houstonians can get a taste of New York's spin on French-style ice cream starting this week.

The Brooklyn-based concept Van Leeuwen Ice Cream will open its first Texas location Saturday in Rice Village.

According to Timothy Malcolm at Houstonia, the New York ice cream shop boasts more than 30 dairy and vegan flavors, and each month, the French-style ice cream shop will unveil four special flavors — both dairy and vegan options, alongside other cold desserts like sundaes, ice cream sandwiches, root beer floats and milkshakes that all come with an array of toppings.

Van Leeuwen's opening day will be filled with promotions, including $1 scoops all day Saturday and the unveiling of a new Texas-inspired ice cream flavor to the public — Yellow Rose Bourbon Pecan Pie.

To complement the debut, popular Houston artist Donkeeboy was selected to design new merchandise for the ice cream shop and will be on-site painting a live mural outside the building Saturday.

The Van Leeuwen brand, while based in New York, is no stranger to the Gulf Coast — the brand that originally started as a food truck in 2008 has made its way across the nation via grocers like Sprouts, Central Market and H-E-B.

"We are excited to be opening in Houston. As a small, family run business, the decision to expand into a new market was a really big deal for us," CEO Ben Van Leeuwen said in a statement. "What attracted us to Houston was the incredible cultural and culinary diversity and the feeling of progress, growth in modernity the city radiates. The average daily temperature didn’t hurt either."

The brand plans to expand over the summer and open Uptown Park and Montrose locations.

If you want to get an early taste of what Van Leeuwen has to offer, the company's food truck will be riding around town offering Houston residents a sampling of its famous french ice cream.

Van Leeuwen Ice Cream is located at 2565 Amherst St. in Rice Village and will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, starting Saturday.
