Dannesha Dunlap picked up one last set of pins for her Girl Scouts sash on Saturday.

It's already jam-packed with merit patches, Girl Scouts Honors and Stellar Seller awards for selling Girl Scout Cookies. In 2019, the East Nashville Magnet High School senior led the Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee by selling 4,200 boxes of cookies.

But Saturday's awards were special. After last year's ceremony was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee presented awards earned during the past two years to more than 500 Girl Scouts. The ceremony was held at the Nashville Sounds' First Horizon Park.

"It feels good, because some people don't get it," said Dunlap, 17. "It feels different being recognized."

Dunlap was one of 343 Scouts to earn a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award, the highest honors a Girl Scout can achieve. This year's winning projects contributed over 10,000 community service hours across Middle Tennessee and focused on topics such as local history, autism awareness, online safety and homelessness.

"Girl Scouts Highest Awards are a tremendous undertaking, requiring planning, persistence, and a commitment to tackling the most important issues impacting our communities," Agenia Clark, President and CEO of Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee, said in a news release. "We are so proud to recognize the service and achievements of these Girl Scouts and look forward to seeing all that they will accomplish in the future."

Many projects addressed the coronavirus pandemic. After the pandemic scrapped her original Gold Award project idea, Dunlap created and delivered care packages to sick and elderly patients who couldn't receive visitors during the pandemic. The project, titled "A Ray of Sunshine on a Cloudy Day," will be carried on by her church in the future.

"Seeing their faces, some of them were real surprised," Dunlap said. " So many people asked me for my address, and they sent me a thank you letter. It warmed my heart."

Dunlap, along with five other Gold Award winners, also won the Agenia Clark Gold Award Scholarship, which she said she'll use next year at either the University of Memphis or Tennessee State University. The ceremony also honored adult volunteers and Stellar Sellers, Scouts who met certain sales goals for the organization's Fall Product Program or its Girl Scout Cookie sales drives.
