As Restaurants Close, Farmers Find New Ways to Feed People

Stay-at-home orders that closed the restaurant industry have translated to economic disaster for farmers. Many of the distressed farmers are trying to forge new ways to connect to consumers, and fast. They are turning to companies like Our Harvest, an online platform that delivers produce in New York. And New York City Greenmarkets are using the Fellow Farmer app to facilitate orders and local deliveries. Chicago's Green City Market developed an app that offers delivery from 15 farmers and counting. Perhaps the greatest challenge farmers face is trying to solve these problems in real time. Farmers must contend with the new reality of social distancing and maintaining food safety standards. Now is a crucial moment for many farmers, but at least there is some reason for optimism.
